I'm thinking about doing Linux and was wondering about which version to choos. I've read a good bit of the stuff in the link above, and it gives great info about Linux and the two "flavors", but I can't really get an idea as to which one to use.
Any Ideas?
Remember, I'm a Rookie at Linux :)
Thanx!

Get Mandrake. Get a good book also...check out O'Reilly's Running Linux.

Redhat is really good also but Mandrake is more geared for the beginner.

Thanx UOD ... what about all these other brands - like Slacker, SuSe etc. Are they just Linux w/ different wrapping?

Slackware is for the more advanced Linux user.

You got it, their all based on the Linux kernel with little differences in software packaging and system management.

In addition to a book or two on the topic, you might want to find your local Linux Users Group (LUG) and join. Here's a list (http://linux.com/usergroups.pl) of 'em. Also, the newsgroups are a great resource--as well as sites like Linuxnewbie.org (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/). Finally, Linux.com (http://linux.com/) has an article (http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/03/09/1727250) that gives a fairly decent description of Linux in general, and gives a breakdown of the major distributions (RedHat, Debian, Slackware, SuSE, etc.)--what their goals are and stuff like that.

Thanx for all the great info guys! I wound up going w/ SuSE. It read like it was very newbie-oriented and that's me when it comes to Linux :) Now as soon as my Hard Dive comes in (had one die on me), I should be ready to Rock-n-Roll :)
