First time I've seen this:

I went to install Win2000 Pro on a re-formated hard drive:

- K6-III 450MHZ w/ 256 RAM
- Giga-Byte 5AX MB
- Samsung 6GB HD
- Dimmond 4MB Video AGP

I pulled all the cards out accept the AGP Video. I can start the install fine (blue screen) up untill it says its starting win2000 setup. Then it re-boots itself. The next step should be asking me about which format I want (FAT32 or NTFS).

I have the latest Bios and have tried earlier versions as well. I have also tried switching the video card from another win2000 pro computer. Still re-boots. I have let it re-boot it's self three or more times in a row.

I'm starting to think the MB is not win2000 compatable! Because the only other thing could be the hard drive, but that doesn't make sense.

Thanks all,

Fuzzy Z

Sounds like maybe a RAM problem, are you sure your RAM is good? Is it seated properly? While you are in the case double check all your IDE cables and your jumpers for your drive.:)

Well I wouldn't bother installing 2000 on this machine .. it will be really slow.

I disagree. While it may not be up to the speed of say a new P4, it should be fine. I have architects and engineers running AutoCAD 2002 w/Win2K on 400's and 500's w/256. The amount of ram will help a lot. I've installed it on lots of PII's- 266's; 300's and 350's. A couple of my office PC's are PII 400's. They all work great.

Have you FDisk'd the drive? Just for kicks, boot to a dos/win98 startup disk, and type fdisk /mbr. Then run fdisk and delete all partitions. Reboot with Win2K CD, and try again. Bad ram could indeed also be the problem, but it sounds like it's not finding the boot record.

I need your help in getting rid of the white space in CP due to autocad installed. I had this fixed years ago and with this new machine it is back. Wasn't there an extra space in a reg key? Phil

I was gonna suggest the fdisk /mbr as well, especially on a pre-formatted drive.
