Lobo suggested I invoke your name in a clarion call for help regarding my email woes, as explained in this thread:

Sorry been busy at Firehouse today:o, from reading your post I think AOL is the problem. Have you always had this problem or what was the last thing you did prior to having it? I know AOL does not play nice with other ISP's and things, it integrates itself into things it shouldn't. I would get rid of AOL and see if that solves the problem, if not you can always reinstall it (don't know why anyone would though:)). Try and remember anything that you did (installing an app or something) prior to it happening. Are you using a firewall? Is it configured properly for your email. Let me know. Also what was it you did to allow yourself to receive emails?:) :D

My recollection is that the problem developed some time after I installed Speedcorp 9x enhancer. (Might be unrelated -- I do know the speed tweak appeared to cause a DNS resolution problem that I ultimately fixed by cleaning out my host file and uninstalling the enhancer.)

I am using a year-old version of Black Ice Defender -- it does not appear to affect my email. I also have Intel Anypoint Phoneline Home Network on my computer.

What did I do to permit myself to receive emails? I used Lobo's TCP Optimizer, then on his advice went to the software forum where I posted a description of my woes. (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=76602) There people suggested various MTU and vctp.386 tweaks and patches, and Adaware clean-ups, which I also tried. Something worked, at least partly. Sorry I can't give you a better description -- but then what else can you expect from someone who has AOHell on his machine?

Try and download newest version of AOL, you do not have to uninstall old, maybe you did not get all of it or it faded:) :)

And if that does not work, on AOL you can get real time help, do that:)

It's happy hour!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

Actually did follow Lobo's advice and downloaded newest version of AOL. It's just as bad as the old one, and did not have the desired effect of fixing my email problem.

I consulted their real time help, and they insisted that it was impossible to tell the difference in Lobo's responses pre- or post- happy hour.

Uninstalling is next. After happy hour.

I don't drink, I was kidding, but AOL man is here:)

Uninstalled AOL. Mail attachment problem appears to be disimproved, if that's a word. (Formerly could squeeze out a 130kb attachment on two or three tries -- no it's no go.)

Any other advice and counsel?

I'm still trying various RWIN configs as per Lobo's advice -- they don't seem to have a big effect one way or another. Any chance that the absence of AOHell would require me to try going through the list of settings again?

Jim I'm thinking it's some issue with your firewall or possibly an ad blocking app (if you have one). Try disabling your firewall and see if it works. I'm still thinking on what it could be though.:)

Disabled firewall -- with no effect.

I used Adaware on the advice of someone in the software forum to remove "spyware," hoping that might help my problem, but am not using any of its adblocking features.

Problem is a very stubborn one.

Here was YeOldeStoneCat's thought: "I've run into the problem you're seeing quite a bit. Back when the very first Linksys broadband routers rolled off the factory, I did my first broadband setup when DSL came around...on a network using a Linksys Etherfast router. A problem occured similar to yours, where plain text e-mails went out fine, but sending e-mails with any size attatchment would get errors relating to SMTP server. Working with Linksys support....as their firmware was just in it's first version or so, it didn't have the MTU option that became available last year or two in 1.36 or 1.37, whatever.....so they referred me to 2x patches over here at speedguide.net...my first visit here!!! They told me to play with the vtcp patch, and I believe the MTU patch. I applied both of those...and BAM...problem gone! BTW...if you run all your Windowsupdates, one of the updates does give you the new vtcp.386 file. But you can compare versions."

Tried that particular fix, among others, with no luck.:(

Threw in the towel and called Microsoft's pay-per-incident line. First level tech support, after an hour, threw in his towel and "escalated" it to second level.

After all the towels are thrown and if the problem is ever resolved, I'll let you know.

Thanks for your advice and counsel, however.

It would appear that uninstalling and reinstalling Norton Anti-Virus 2002 twice has fixed my problem.

Tech guy said he had someone with a similar problem and the second removal and reinstallation did it.:) :D :rotfl:

Man, am I ever glad -- assuming, of course, the fix holds....

I guess Bill Gates is not the spawn of Satan.
