I have look all the places I can think of on the net for info and have found very little to explain my problem. The problem started a few days ago. I started to notice that any web site I opened would take about 5 to 10 seconds to pop up and half were missing graphics. I figured a router close to me was dropping packets so I started running some tracerts.

What I discovered was one ip is always the 1st hop after it leaves my router. This ip is 10.34.0.1. and it was consistantly dropping 10 - 20% of the pings. Well, I searched the net a while for info, did some whois, etc. and a lot of ping tests and more tracerts. The only thing I could find is that ip is suppose to be part of a block set aside for private networks. After messing with this for half the night this ip stopped dropping the packets and all is working as it should now.

What I am trying to understand is why a reserved ip is always the 1st hop on any tracert I run. I have 3 systems connected to a USR8000a router and then to the cable modem. I tried hooking one pc direct to the cable modem and that ip is still the 1st hop.
Can anyone tell me why a reserved ip (10.34.0.1) would be the 1st hop between my modem and my isp? Do I have anything to worry about? Could this be a hacker of some sort thats tapped into my line?

10 51 ms 57 ms 54 ms pos5-0.colo1.mcl.cais.net [63.216.0.34]
11 51 ms 65 ms 51 ms forums.speedguide.net [63.217.30.71]

Trace complete.

It's normal (Not the dropping of the packets and packet loss) and nothing to worry about. I'll let Kip Patterson or one of the others answer the question as to what it is or I'll have you all confused.;)

Thanks much for the replys :) For the most part I am not the paranoid type. I suppose all the sercurity hype in the media can even take its toll on the best of us , hehe.

Hmm, ok so this is the ip of my modem? I thought that was a dynamic or static address that rr assigned to me though? The one that any web site gets when I view the page.

It is not the IP of your modem. Cable modems operate as transparent bridges and do not show up on traceroutes. It is the IP of the cable side of the CMTS at the headend.

Ok so this is a device outside my conection. I just thought it was strange because I could ping it and it shows up on all my outgoing tracerts but, I don't see it on any inbound tracerts from the various tracert sites on the web.

Now that I know what it is, if its dropping packets I take it I should report this to RR so they can repair it?

Let me see if I can get this right so kip will not jump on me,YES, But you need to do something , you need to record when it take place, how often it take place, and how much you lose. Because every body has some packet loss from time to time. IF you do that you will have enough info to show that you do have a problem, It could be anything from the modem, the cable from the modem to the headend ,or the headend it self.

Ahh, ok :) thanks much for the info. I will start taking logs on a daily basis when I notice any problems.
