I've just built a new system and while installing my Zyxel Prestige ADSL USB modem it kept crashing on reboot, giving me an exception error. I reinstalled 98se which solved that exact problem, but now if I bootup with the modem connected to the PC it hangs at a black screen. This is not a huge problem, but a pain in the donkey nonetheless. I just unplug the USB connection if I have to reboot for any reason. Anyone know what's going on and/or how to fix it?

Were you using winXP before you reinstalled 98SE?
Also, use a NIC instead of USB. The NIC is MUCH better and may solve your problem.

No, fresh install of 98se.

Excuse my total and utter ignorance, but what's NIC?

No problem. NIC-Network Interface Card. You can get one for about $20 or so. Linksys NIC at CompUSA would do you fine. Your cable modem probably came with some CAT5 cable also (looks like large diameter phone line). That CAT5 cable would hook from your modem to the NIC.

A NIC is a card that you would install on your motherboard. Much like a sound card or video card. We here at SG can help you with installing that if you buy one.

Thought so.
Mine's ADSL, not cable BTW. Is it possible to hook a USB modem to a Network card? I didn't think it was.

Is it USB only? Didn't they make it both USB or NIC compatable? What is the brand and model number?
