getting in search engines!!

whats the best way to get into a search engine ??? ive tried for a few but there 'bots' dont seem to do it for me !?!
any suggestions ??

My experience is to have updated META information and a "robots.txt" file to tell the spiders where they can and cannot go.

Also, free lisitngs are GREAT, but they can take several months.
I would suggest payuing the 40 bucks or so to get included in like inktomi (DB for AOL and MSN). They will get your site listed in like two days.

There are a few more, but I would only pay for the main ones (if time is a matter). If time means nothing you don't have to pay but do several searches to see how to improve your listing and involvement on the search engines.
