P3 1ghz
716mbs of ram
98/2k dual boot
cable behind linksys router

I"m running a dual boot 98/win2k the promblem is I'm on the net at a whopping 879kbs down and 124 up. The main question is how to setup static ip's and network protocols in a dual boot correctly my way obivously didn't work.
I hope this is the right fourm. I need all the help i could get.

Configuring static IP's and network protocols must be done on a per OS basis. Having a dual boot configuration does not affect the network configuration of each OS.

Are you asking how to setup TCP/IP, NetBEUI, File/Print Sharing, etc?

Yeah i think that's what i'm asking. see i have tcpip installed in 98,and 2k i also have client for microsoft applications installed on both and static ip's setup on both. My download speeds are awful..

You have to have TCP/IP installed to access the internet through your shared connection. Client for Microsoft Networks is also required.

Are you downloading from FTP's, HTTP, IRC, etc.? Have you attempted any of the tweaks that can be obtained here?

Yeah i tried the tweaks on here. I think it's something to do with the nic or is it because i have both os's on the same partion. no I haven't downloaded anything off of mirc or ftp. I had a dual boot running before I had similar promblem. I took like 3or4 speed test all slow as heck. N/m I got it to work thanx anyway yeah I turn everything off router, 2comps,modem. Power on modem then router the comp. Thanx though keep up the good work with this site

It has nothing to do with a dual boot with OS's on the same partition, the OS's running entirely independent of each other. Who manufactures the NIC in that machine? NIC's for the most part perform about the same, however, many people claim they can see differences in performance between different manufacturers. If you want top of the line NIC cards with excellent driver support and compatibility then get 3Com or Intel.

The reason I think it is the nic. Is due to the fact of the mac adressing. it seems like everytime i reboot i have relaese and renew all is there any suggestions you could gvie me. my download is donw to 768ks

He does have somewhat of a point, I don't suggest getting a new NIC, it probably won't solve the problem. You have to think, when you access the router what is it doing! It is checking who you computer is, creating a MAC, changing addresses, plus several other things depending on your router options. I suggest turning of the MAC addressing, it is just there to keep hiding your IP. Your router should probably be using NAT. Try this. The more steps you eliminate the better. Also, you OS setting. You should only have your network card, TCP/IP and Microsoft networking open. Any additional delete. Also check the bindings by clicking on the network card you are using. When you are binding all of these features it takes up some time. Try this out and if not we will attack it from a different way. Again how was the speed with just Win98 on the machine. Also are you using System Commander to do the dual boot?

It was a memory leak I ugraded my chip to p3 from a clereon.
Both ram sticks were 133mhz what was odd is they didn't like each other.

We they the same brand and Nano seconds? That info is on the RAM. Are you sure it was a memory leak or just faulty? I guess there was no parity.
