Go to the Network Control Panel and open the TCP/IP protocol for your NIC card. There is a tab in Windows 98 that on some systems will allow you to set it to Auto, 10MB Half-Duplex or 100MB Full-Duplex. You can find similiar information the same way in XP.

actually i figured it out....but i have another question... im transfer mp3 files from one computer to another in a lan around 4MB each... each takes bout 40sec to a minute long... shouldnt this be faster? instead of being at 100MB full duplex its at AUTO SENSE. and if i do put it at 100MB full duplex, i get no internet connection. any thoughts? what im trying to do is that im just trying to make file sharing within the LAN the quickest way possible...

thanks for the help

Is your LAN setup through a router, switch or a hub? Are the NIC cards 100MB Full-Duplex capable?

im connected to a linksys router through a five port 10MB per second hub.... i just found out i was connected to the hub... this is actually my friends house.... so is the speed of 40sec to a minute for a 4MB file usual through a 10MB hub?

Yes, those speeds are accurate for transferring data between 2 computers on a hubbed network. The Linksys is the 1-port model eh?

He could always buy a switch to replace the hub then he eliminates the problem. Price Watch has the Linksys 5-Port EZXS55W Switch listed for $34.
