Is there a built in recovery in w2k like ME or XP? I'm having a problem with my CD and CDRW drives. w2k cannot load the drivers due to "Code 31". It seems that there is a problem with an associated component. I cannot figure this out. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers as well as the IDE controllers. I am really lost here. Any ideas?

Awesome! All fixed!

I was unsure about the LKGC in w2k, but it worked. I'm really starting to like w2k.

The "Last Known Good Configration" is a carryover from Windows NT and basically allows you to boot the computer to a previous version of some specific registry hives.

It's main purpose is for recovery after a bad driver load or something similiar. Say you install a new SCSI driver and after rebooting NT blue screens during bootup. You can use the LKGC option to boot with the previous driver.

But, you should know that the LKGC information is overwritten when you login to the box, so if you boot-up, login right away and THEN the box dies, then the LKGC won't do you any good in this scenario. That's why you should always let all the services startup and the machines settle down BEFORE logging in after updating important drivers or other system files.

Use ntbackup on a regular basis so you have MANY backed up registries not just one called LKGC
START|Run > ntbackup (Use the Advanced button for more options)

If a problem goes on too long, the LKGC will be as bad as the current registry. Having a few extra backups will save your butt oneday.
