View Full Version : File Transfer Corruption - Tweaks to Blame?

Repost:
I used the TCPOptimizer program and set it to optimal settings on cable for my system on WinXP and rebooted. I'm using a Linksys router with a Netgear FA311 NIC. Everything is speedy except for the fact that my file transfers over AIM are all becoming corrupted, even when off of the router and on other NICs. For example, I send an MP3 to someone and when the transfer is done, AIM says the file sent doesn't match. The other person plays the MP3 but it's all skippy and poppy everywhere. ZIP and RAR files also fail CRC checks when sent through AIM. My webcam and how it uploads to my FTP, the image gets corrupted too. Any ideas as to what could cause this?

Pro. I switched NICs from last time to an Intel PRO 100 S. I tried setting the original NIC to half duplex but that didn't work so I switched NICs all together. Took off all the tweaks, off of my router, brand new NIC and same problem.
Something in XP is screwing this up...
Have you been messing in services folder?:) :)

What in there could I have possibly modified that would piss me off this much?
Just so long as you have not messed with it, is this a Cable connection:)

I never changed anything in there so I'm still confused as to what could be my problem. I'm getting REALLY frustrated because I can't upload files to anyone on AIM and I really do not prefer using Yahoo or ICQ... that and I'd like remote desktop connection to not crash on me.
is this a Cable connection

Yep, Time Warner - Road Runner, Rochester, NY.
Also do you have newest router firmware installed from router website and:
Please click in my signature where it says Test tweak here, then:
At top where it says edit click and select, Select all,
Then go back to same edit button at top, click and select copy.
Come back to Speed Guide, same thread you were on, in post reply box, with cursor blinking at begining of box go to top, edit, click, select paste, click, this will put information in box. Please X out your IP address, Thank you.:)
Optimizer should be on both puters

Yes, and it did the same when I took myself off of the router.
TCP options string = 020405b401010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 116 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
Do you have any other speed patches installed, whose:)

No speed patches aside from here, which I removed and set everything to default.
The only patch I have installed is the webtweaks right now.
Where did that RWIN come from, our patch puts in 256960:)

I ran the TCPOptimizer and set it to set everything to Windows default so whatever that did, that's what's in there.
Run Optimizer again, needs to be on both puters, optimal settings.
it's not XP, have you redownloaded AIM, do so right on top of one you have now it will overwrite, install again and try transfer:)

Tried reinstalling AIM, uninstalling and then reinstalling too.
And I can't have everyone out there to have these tweaks installed. Besides, I already tried that and they still come out corrupted.
This isn't a problem with AIM alone. My webcam uploads the pictures to my ftp all corrupted and remote desktop connection crashes because of the corrupted data being sent.
Have you changed anything in registry?:)

Nothing related to networking, just some startup stuff and CD caching.
I'm stumped unless your AIM is a beta that has bugs:)

*sigh*
it's not only AIM. that's my point. forget it, I'm probably going to end up formatting to fix this anyhow. thanks anyway.
Somethings been changed that should not have been:)
For what it's worth, I have had more and more CRC errors with RAR files, either downloaded to my harddrive, or uploaded to friends with ICQ. Usually repeating the process solves the problem.
Also, I have noticed "stalls" in my speed test at www.bandwidthplace.com since I installed the tweaks. These stalls weren't there before, but it doesn't seem to impact my results, at least I don't think it does anyway.
If you figure out what's up with the CRC corruptions, let me know.
