Ok..simple problem, I'm a fool ;) so... I have the "motorola surfboard" installed on my PC and everything is working great....but I need to know how to go about setting up my hub to connect to the surfboard.... I need ALL the steps...I have a 8 port 10/100 dual speed SMC switch...I just need the internet connection to be shared, not any info between PC's.....any help would be much appreciated..thanks
btw,I know a lot about PCing so don't dumb it down too much for me,just not too bright in the networking department ;]

To share a single IP address, you need either a hardware or software router/proxy (ICS, WINGATE, SYGATE, etc). IF you go software, you will also need an additional NIC for the 'server' machine. You won't need the hub or switch (can't tell which you have, but it doesn't matter)
Otherwise you need to purchase an additional IP address from your ISP for each machine on your LAN.

Is the network cable a cross over cable? To go from nic card to nic card without a hub or router you need a crose over cable. A regular network cable will not work.

Check the cable, if the writing on the cable says CAT 5, it is not crossover but straight cable.
If you are using a hub then I know great and very easy to use software called IShare, to share internet connections. You do realize that the computer with the main connection has to be on while trying to share the lnternet with other computers. Basically a server.
Hope this helps.

Sharing a connection with software.
It's much better to buy a router though.

I agree, when you share with software you are splitting the connection from the computer and are putting the larger workload on your NIC's. If you get a router you will be sharing the connection directly from the main line and you will not always have to have a computer on to share internet connection.
