Trying to disable EMM386 in config.sys, so I can flash my BIOS.

Problem: when I enter DOS and type "edit config.sys" it brings up a completely blank screen.

I assume I only have 1 config.sys file, so how can this be?

Start - run - type sysedit. It's not uncommon for it to be blank because you really don't need anything there. Just copy and paste what's in it into notepad and then delete it and put it back later.:)

Excellent, thanks for the tip.:)

Not sure I understand though....

So, in order to place REM in front of the EMM386 path...

In Windows, run/sysedit, (and get a screen similar to what's in config.sys?) copy and paste into what?

Are you saying that sys.edit will have the same info in it as config.sys?

Thanks for the help, I'm trying.

Why don't you just make a startup disk with just the system files? use a blank floppy and go to format it and create system file option. You can do it in windows and in dos. To do it in dos type format a:/s and your done. You won't need to edit the config.sys file at all.

Better questions is why is EMM386 being used at all?

It hasn't been needed since win 95

Do like Sid suggested, get a 95/98 boot disk http://www.bootdisk.com

Mobo BIOS flash instructions will tell you to make sure you don't have EMM loading...because it can hose your BIOS flash...which is a bad thing...rendering your motherboard into an expensive conversation piece for your coffee table. It's good just to take a minute to check to be sure it isn't loading.

Lots of OEM computers come with some of the legacy lines in config.sys. While true, since 95 came out, you literally do not need an autoexec.bat or a config.sys to run Winders....some devices like sound cards will load lines in there so they work under legacy apps (like old games). Also some older engine software will load lines in there (files=, etc). And a lot of us who used to tweak the snot out of 9X would edit config.sys to optimize conventional memory...so the OS would run better. (himem.sys, emm386 NOEM, dos=high,umb)...those 3 lines would get conventional memory free up above 600k.

For BIOS flashing, most people will boot from a boot disk to flash...and make sure you double check the config.sys that's on your boot disk..(a:\config.sys) since that will be the one loading.
