someone show me the way/path to applying the only change suggested?
Acer P2
128meg RAM 4gig HD
W98, IE5.5
External 56k Pragmatic High Speed modem
This system acts the server for a total of 3 comps through WinRoute network card and an Accton hub
We are on a dialup connection and on a good day, the max speed we (?)enjoy(?) is 5.5kbps.

from the results page
MTU = 576
MTU value seems to be optimized for dial-up. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.

Does the comment that the value seems to be optimized for dial-up mean there is no benefit in setting this to a higher value?

Thanks in advance.

That is correct. Due to how the phoneline transfers data, if you send a larger packet, aka a packet of 1500, you will experience some packet loss.

Thanks for the reply Koribouros.

I was hoping for better news, like maybe this would be able to change and improve our internet experience. Guess not.
Broadband is not an option here because of the distance problem so we will survive with our lot.

Thanks again for the response.

Well, you can always try modem teaming. It's basiclly signing up for two 56k service and use two modems on the same computer to double the speed. I believe you would know a lot more using the Search here at SG then you can get out of little me. There's a couple of discussions I have seen in the past about this. :)

That was an early suggestion from my son who wanted faster connection speeds. We have already looked at it.
It also involves dual phone line costs, dual connection costs and permission from the ISP before it can be done.

Try my "56K tweaks" in my sig. It is better to have MTU set to 1500 for broadband and dial up. There is no difference in ping, packet loss or any ill effects setting it to 1500, just better throughput. Alot of dial up ISP's have a MTU of 1500 now so if it is set to 576 you will not get the best throughput, just do as I suggested and see, as long as MTU Discovery is on (set to 1) you will match the MTU of the site you are on thereby maximizing speed, if it is set to 576 and the site's MTU is 1500..... well not optimized. I have done extensive testing with this with many different ISP's and pc's and 1500 definitely works best.:) :D
