HI, guys...I am trying to run a dedicated server for Aliens versus predator 2, I installed my network with a belkin 4 port cable router my ping went from 2000kb/s to 1450kb/s!!!! Do you think its the router?? I have cat 6 network cables installed so its not that!!! Can you recoomend a router good enough for online games(dedicated servers)?? I belive awhile ago the linksys had problems with dedicated game servers, is that still true?? Any reccomendations??
here are my server specs:
1.6 gig pent 4
384 ddr ram
win xp
belkin 10/100 nic card
belkin 4 port cable router

PLEASE HURRY i AMY HAVE TO RETURN THE ROUTER!!!

Ping isn't measure in bits or bytes, so I'm not sure what you are referring to.:)

What type of connection are you hosting the server on and how many players are you hosting?

Sorry I meant download speed, you really don't have control over upload speed...I am hosting on cable with 7 players....it went from 2000kb/s to 1450/kb/s download speed!!!

Your download speed will change when hosting as bandwidth (downstream & upstream) is required.

i'm sorry let me state my problem again..I used to have a connection speed of 2000kb/s on my older pc, now after the network is installed I have a speed of 1450kb/s!!! even with a tweakmaster program installed.....basically it dropped from 2000 to 1450....my server is brand new but it connects presently at 1450kb/s also!!! I don't think I should lose about 550kb/s....I know these values are corrected I tested them at www.dslreports.com....Do you think its the network as a whole or the belkin router??? I don't think i should lose that much should I??These tests were done without hosting the game!!!(the reason I came across this is I noticed lag in the game on my dedicated server, where before when I was hosting and playing off same pc there was no lag!! Any ideas what is causing the slowdown??? could it be the router???

If this is a residential cable or DSL connection, hosting and gaming simultaneously will most likely saturate the upstream.

As for the initial problem, try disconnecting the rouer, attaching the modem directly to a PC and rerunning the speed test. If your speed returns to where it was, the problem is the router or LAN configuration.

iv had a belkin ther good routers u shouldnt lose much banwith but rember thers a firwall and most newer belkins use NAT So make sure them are off cuz NAT will slow u down a bit

and how many other pc u got on the router make sure ther off when doin dl test and what speed is your dsl or cable caped at 2000ks are like 2meg or so

but netgear is the best:D

NAT is responsible for the translation between routable (global) and non-routable (local) IPs. Without it, each computer on requiring internet access would need a global IP.

Kick up your router a few notches....I've worked with a Belkin router before...for a few minutes, til it went in the garbage. Belkin makes decent printer cables and patch cables...but...

Any router that you want to run a public server on, and have any sort of consideration for it's performance....go up a few notches, NetGear, Nexland, Netopia, Cisco. (in ascending order according to cost)
