Windows 98se is fine but all the hipe on the new OS software has encouraged me to ugrade. I know that most people have xp, but a few reviews i read made it seem like a redone windows ME. A friend told me to go with Windows 2000 pro. So what is the best? im a extreme gamer who likes to multitask. I need a system that is going to get the crap kicked out of it and not fight back with a blue screen. So which way should i go?

Or do i have it all wrong and should go for Linux? :o

*When i say gaming i mean online games primarily; and multitasking I do a lot because I have 2 monitors hooked up to a dual display card. Thats why im asking Online Gaming for their opinion and not Software;)

Being based on the NT kernel, XP is just like 2K not ME, which is based on the 9x kernel.

Anyway, I haven't upgraded to XP because of the amount of hard drive space required, extra wizards and novice interfaces for dummies and because of the worthless skinning features that do nothing more than consume resources and complicate navigation (along with the new interface).

Assuming you use the 2k interface (i.e. disable the new interface/skinning feature), it should perform about the same. It should also support any hardware/software that 2K does not.

As for Linux, I doubt you'll find Linux versions of all the games you play or drivers that fully support your video card and it's multi-monitor capability.

I had xp pro for about 2 months, had some hardware problems and it was slow.

Switched to 2000 pro and NO hardware problems, very stable, and I have more ram free

XP runs likes a champ for me. I stayed with 98SE up til last fall when XP came out...2K was just too sluggish for games for me, and quite frankly, 98se the way I build and tune it is rock stable, and very fast.

Did you have to change anything specific,,, reason I ask is that Xp for CS (half-life) just doesn't seem to run the greatest.

Problems I have seen are fps are lower and when using in game voice your voice comes out choppy almost like the mic is getting too small of cycle time to catch your voice.

Additionally my p3 450 box consistently averages lower ping times and drops the connection like never,,, Xp will drop once in a while,,, the worst for dropping is WinME, but WinME still has better fps than XP like twice as many fps.

Any light you or anyone else can supply would be greatly appreciated.
