A pain in the ass problem.

I have Win98SE machine with an Alcatel USB Speedtouch modem. On this 'server' machine I have Wingate (proxy & firewall) & Mdaemon (mail server) running. The server machine is connected on a network with other Win98SE machines.
The crux of the problem is that I can't send email through the mail server - it times out trying. WWW traffic is working fine. I have done extensive tests.
If I try & telnet to port 25 from the server machine to a remote mail server, I can send mail ok.
If I try & send mail through Mdaemon (mail server) it times out. The remote mail server logs indicate that SMTP handshaking is fine but the DATA never actually reaches it.
Hmmm, you say, well it must be the Mdaemon mail server. Well I thought that, but I can connect a 56K modem to the server machine (through PSTN) & everything is hunky dory!
So what's the problem?

I have read about MTU settings & decided to play with that using DrTCP. Changing the MTU size to under 1500 doesn't affect the outcome for the ADSL modem. However, if I change the MTU size to something other than 0, the 56K modem shows the same email timeout problems.

If anyone can sort this out, I'd be most grateful.

Cheers
Kaboom

Welcome to SpeedGuide.net...

I don't know the answer, but you might want to try posting this on the MDaemon forums (http://forum1.deerfield.com/~mdaemon) as well.
