View Full Version : Earthlink DSL Modem
I currently have ELN DSL that is working well. the modem is a Zyxel Prestige 600. I would like to buy a 2nd modem for my son's computer so when I am not using the DSL connection he can use it and I don't want to network the 2 machines at this time. Does anyone know where I can find a DSL modem that is inexpensive and will work with ELN. ELN does not provide information on their network as to what you can use because I suspect they want you to use only their equipment.
Thanks!:)

JFYI, the second DSL modem will have to be pulled in to the same outlet as the DSL is installed. If you are using filters (self-install), you can change this outlet fairly easyily, though it would be best to network the two computers and share the connection with a router.
I suggest you buy another identical Zyxel P642M-11 or P645M (or ME) on ebay. They are quite reasonable in cost there. Be sure to get the Zyxel model that Earthlink ships, it's just a bit different in its internal setup than "generic" Zyxel P600 series setup.
Earthlink can't tell one modem from another over their network, it's your internal setup that counts. You will have to reconfigure the second modem to be identical to the first. It's not that hard, and since you are using officially supported Earthlink hardware, you can lean on the support desk for assistance.
Or you can ask here and get lots of assistance, I'm sure.
(Aside: Personally, I'd network the two computers. I think that's less work and won't cost anymore, but it's entirely up to you. Some parents use this method to control internet access, perhaps you may actually prefer doing it this way.)
