I installed this yesterday and am having a couple of problems. The first one is that I try to click on a thread and get nothing, no responce at all, then I move the mouse over the link and hit enter 8 or 9 times until I can get in. Any ideas?

And this one is because I'm curious about things. What is a gateway?

I go into Access Manager and click to get on line and the first thing it says in the window is "cannot find gateway" then I'm on line.

I'm on Windows 98SE if it helps and have no virus detection on and no firewall.

TIA.

Thanks alot glc1. The first part was it. Do you know anything about this gateway thing or is it connected to the settings I just changed?

A gateway is the stopping part of one network and the begining of another. When someone asks about your gateway, it's usually the first hop in traceroute.

Tracing route to www.yahoo.akadns.net [216.115.102.75]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms 192.168.1.1

2 10 ms 10 ms <10 ms sdsl-216-x-x-x.dsl.sjc.megapath.net [216.x.x.x]

3 <10 ms 10 ms 10 ms main4-main3-fe.sjc1.above.net [209.249.203.203]

4 10 ms 10 ms <10 ms core1-main2-oc12.sjc1.above.net [208.185.175.253]

5 <10 ms 10 ms 10 ms pao1-sjc1-oc12-2.pao1.above.net [207.126.96.65]

6 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms yahoo-above-1.pao1.above.net [64.125.31.230]

7 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms ge-1-3-0.msr2.pao.yahoo.com [216.115.100.146]

8 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms vl20.bas1.snv.yahoo.com [216.115.100.225]

9 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms w3.snv.yahoo.com [216.115.102.75]

Trace complete.

In the traceroute above, hop 2 is actually my gateway because hop one is my SDSL router, as the internal IP indicates.

Btw, if you are using a router or have a computer setup to share your connection, this device can also be called a gateway b/c it's the last hop on your network.

The can't find gateway is actually a windows message at it looks for the gateway before it's ready. It's not an error in any way, and nothing to be concerned with.

OK, now you lost me. Why then, when I hit connect does it say in the message box "cannot find gateway D0125" and then I'm on line? Is this normal or is something wrong? And since your so helpful, can you explain to me how I do a trace and how I can test my speeds. I was given a site for speed tests but none were in Canada and I didn't know if it made a difference. Thanks for all your time and help, it is greatly appreciated.

Conducting Traceroutes
Start | Run | command [hit OK] | tracert x >c:/trace.txt [hit ENTER]
x = IP or domain. For example, www.yahoo.com or 216.115.102.75, which resolves to www.yahoo.com (http://www.yahoo.com).
When finished, browse your C drive for a file called trace.txt. NOTE: Conducting another traceroute with the same output file name will overwrite the previous one.
Windows 2000/XP users: Substitute cmd for command.

The best speed test site for me is dslreports.com. Another good way to test is by downloading from a fast corporate server in your region. I get good results from microsoft.com, so I often test there. Another good one for people seems to be lucasarts.com.

As for the "error" message, it's not really an error and nothing to be concerned about, as Mr. Carrick pointed out.:)

You are welcome Bob...just telling the truth.
You have helped me on numerous occasions in the past...even replying to my frustrated emails on a Sunday.
I will continue to send people to your site, as you have spent time and resources to provide good, solid and factual information relating to PPPoE and it's incarnations.
