Recently acquired a full DSL broadband connection (945kb/s down, 64kb/s up).

On speedtest sites, I noticed that my international dl speed is 25kb/s at max. Much too low, considering the 500-600kb/s I achieve at national dl speeds.

Also, I cannot seem to ping sites (result=timed out) such as microsoft.com, fun.se or even my own Alcatel ethernet modem (with correct settings). While at the same time, I can ping planet.nl, fun.de or even starwars.com

Does anyone know a reason for the fact my international dl is so low? Critical windows updates at microsoft only downloads at 20kb/s. It should be few 100kb/s like other users achieve in my neighbourhood.

I am really at a loss here.
No firewall is used btw.

No one can. They probably have ICMP requests blocked at tehir firewall - being the target that they are, I don't blame them.

Not sure what you are asking for here. Not much you can do about intercontinental traffic (unless you are an MCI customer - they use their own global network).

MS Windows updates is running for me right now in the 25-30k range. I have noticed that it gets busy sometimes - they also released a security update not too long ago...
