This is a great thread :D

Here's a nice little bandwidth metering tool:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,4878,00.asp

As described by PC Magazine:
NetPerSec measures the real-time speed of your Internet connection. Different types of connections promise different communication speeds, but what are you actually getting? Due to network traffic, actual speeds are often slower than what is promised. Cable modems are fast unless many of your neighbors are sharing the line; such modems can slow down considerably with a heavy load. How do you know when it's time to switch to DSL? NetPerSec lets you check your connection speed in real time. It monitors all TCP/IP activity to and from the Internet or other networks, and graphs the communication speed. Its dynamic tray icon shows send and receive activity with a bar graph or a histogram. For details, open the program's main window to view current and average send and receive speeds in a configurable, graphical display. You can adjust the sampling rate and the amount of data used to compute the average. NetPerSec was written by Mark Sweeney, and first appeared in PC Magazine January 16, 2001 (v20n02). Source code is included.

My favorite notepad replacement.

This little proggie has .........
EditPad can open as many files at a time as you want.
You change between the open files by clicking on their tabs. No hassle with heaps of overlapping windows.
If you run EditPad again when there is already an instance running, the file(s) you wish to edit will be opened by the existing EditPad window. This means there will be at most one EditPad window open, which will save you from a lot of task switching. Of course, if you do need more instances, simply pick View|New editor from the menu.
Block functions: save parts of your text to disk and insert a file in the current text
Specify many print settings: font, margins, headers/footers, etc.
Option for keeping the EditPad window on top of all other windows.
When you close an unsaved file, EditPad will either warn you, automatically save the file or do nothing.
Reopen menu that lists the last 16 files opened.
EditPad puts an icon in the system tray that remains visible, even if EditPad is closed. This way you have easy and fast access to EditPad, without the need to keep it running all the time.
Configure the open and save dialog file filters.
EditPad reads UNIX (LF only) and Mac (CR only) text files (in addition to DOS/Win CR+LF files, of course) and can export files to both formats.
ROT-13 standard used on the Usenet for making (possibly) offensive texts illegible.
ANSI <=> OEM (DOS ASCII) conversion

Click here for Edit Pad Classic (http://www.editpadclassic.com/editpadclassic.html)

This is all I use for html editiing. The cost? A postcard. :)

Or you could go for Edit Pad Pro (money) or Lite. check em out!

Sidenote, Windows 2000 or XP will not let you actually replace notepad, 9xxx me will.

Oh dear... One of the late arrivals, again.

Here's one that acts as an early warning for incoming attachments or scripts.

dduptime from http://www.dd-soft.net/software.htm

Another clock synchroniser called TimeSync there too.

Here's 2 from one site. With a keylogger as well (not used)
Password Recovery Suit. Does just that. Shows the password behind the *******
SureDelete. Safe and supposedly complete file removal.

One other is BearDelete to do the DELTREE on index.dat files.
Works very well, Very small.
Site to be added.

Safe surfing for younger children. Sits on top of IE and permits surfing only within the sites linked. Visually stimulating and heaps of sites for hours of entertainment.
ChiBrow from http://www.chibrow.com/

If you are using more than one virus scanner then you can intergrate them with VirusScan Integrater. Allows scanning by multiple AV programs.

EndItAll 2 - Freeware
A True Killer App
(745 kb.)

Windows utilities (like Scandisk & Defrag) and program installers often tell you to shut down all other tasks before running the utility or installation. There are also programs that demand so much computing power that any concurrently running tasks will adversely affect their performance. On today's powerful systems, you easily can have a dozen or more programs loaded at any given time. Shutting them down manually is tedious and time-consuming.

This utility, EndItAll 2, lists all the programs running on your system and lets you decide which ones to close down. The processes necessary for basic system operation are protected from termination, though. From the remaining processes, you can choose which to close, which to kill (close down forcibly), and which to protect. Once you know which files you want to shut down, you can configure EndItAll for automatic action via a script or a batch file. This is useful for backups and defrags during off-hours. Options let you block power-management utilities and screen savers during operation.

Direct Connect
A true peer sharing program (You gotta share to use it :D). It works on the basis that you share your downloaded items, suchs as media, music, games, iso etc.. with other users. There are different "hubs" which you can connect to based on your shares and each has their own "theme" so to speak (For example, there are anime based hubs where all the people share anime and there are music based hubs where they share all mp3s.)
Just a note for all users, if you see something called DC++, don't download it. It's banned on just about all the hubs you can possibly find. Why? because it allows for users to cheat on their shares and only share 3 connections for all the hubs you connect to, instead of only being connected to 1 hub. It's a plague in DC hubs and people are taking care of them like crazy.

www.neomodus.com

A few good hubs that exist (that you might not see on the public list) are(address listed below the hub name):

[DK]River AnduinPr0n allowed.(Min share is like 15gigs):
2650.dyndns.dk

Anime Planet 1No pr0n allowed.(Min share is 30 gigs, going to be only registered users only soon, go and and pm !!Register_Here with your user name and pw you want) :

Batchrun

"Batchrun will let you create batch files using a graphical interface. In the good old days of DOS .bat files took care of this task. They still do, but they're not exactly user friendly. With Batchrun .brs batch files you can launch any number of programs or dialup connections with just a simple click. You can control the starting process with many properties like priority or run mode and control their behavior a tad. You can even do more than starting programs with the built-in file management functions like Copy, Rename, Makedir, Delete and End Process. Batchrun batch files can be launched from Explorer or placed in StartUp folder or on the Desktop."

This link (http://www.spellcheck.net/) doesn't classify so much as a "must have download" but it could fall under a must have bookmark.

Z Volume Pro is a neat program I got a few days ago. I got it because for some reason, the normal Windows volume control doesn't work anymore for me...it got uninstalled somehow, and I can't re-install it.

so during the search for "volume control" on google, ZVolume Pro was the first choice, and it's great.

it's a shareware program, and has controls for bass, treble, and you can customize the controls...it's very useful.

here's the companies website http://www.shelltoys.com

and the direct link http://www.shelltoys.com/zvolume/download.shtml

taken from the software web site: http://www.powertweak.com

============>
Powertweak is designed to configure your system in the best way. A processor, the core of the system, or a chipset (a set of components that manage the data flows between the different parts of the system) can be configured. This requires a direct access to the hardware.

Powertweak detects the system components present in your system and modifies the configuration registers according to the manufacturers documents. This ensures a safe configuration, since your hardware still works in the manufacturer's specifications, contrary to other techniques such as overclocking.

Almost all processors and chipsets available on the current market are recognized by Powertweak. If they were not, no compatibility problem is to be expected : Powertweak only configures known components. For a list of the recognized components, please see the Supported Hardware Page.

Powertweak uses a quick, clear, simple, graphical user interface : on the left side are represented the components of your system : processors, PCI or AGP devices. On the right side, the parameters of this device. Almost all devices have a corresponding information pane, but only those recognized by Powertweak have a configuration pane. Click to enlarge

It is then very simple to optimize one's computer : either you let Powertweak use its default optimization, which works in most cases, or you choose all parameters by yourself, for a custom setup of your machine.

Further explanations are available in the electronic user's guide.

SureDelete (http://dwindustries.cjb.net/) will remove any files that are drag/dropped using DoD and stronger wiping methods and will clean the freespace. 2 options to choose from.

Script Sentry (http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/scriptsentry.asp) is designed to complement your anti-virus program by intercepting files that could contain malicious code. It checks them over and reports just what they might do to your system. You then have the option of canceling, or running the file.

StatBar, with thanks to minir (http://www.statbar.nl/) is a freeware system status bar which allows you to quickly get an overview of your system's condition (memory, CPU, uptime, and much more). A few of the program's features are:
In the most recent version, these modules are available: battery status, CD door eject/close, CPU usage, Dial-Up Networking status, exit/lock buttons, harddisk information, locks status, master volume control, memory status, network traffic meter, QuickLaunch, RC5/OGR counter, time synchronization, Winamp controls, Windows uptime, and Windows version.

AtomicClockSync (http://www.worldtimeserver.com/) will synchronise your system clock and keep it accurate. All timezones are supported.

Crazy browser (http://www.crazybrowser.com/index.htm)

Crazy Browser is a powerful Web browser. It has the ability to open multiple sites and windows inside a single browser task. It also has a Smart Popup Filter - it blocks all the annoying popups automatically!

This has full support for Windows XP Theme and P3P privacy policy and JavaScript error suppression.... It can handle multiple monitors and has tab status indicators. Annoying ad windows can be removed automatically and multiple pages can be saved and reopened together. Crazy Browser comes with many preconfigured search engines, but you can extend it to use your own.

Support Operating System : Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows NT 4.0 or later

Haven't tried it yet but it looks pretty interesting.
