I might soon rebuild (fix the OLD Emachines POS I have sitting on the floor)
need ram and HDD

Celeron 400, Onboard Sound, Video

I'm planning on putting Linux on there and experimenting with it...
I've tried Mandrake 8.0 before (didn't like it)

I just downloaded Redhat 7.2
which others should I look at/experiment with?

I guess you could consider me a "Linux Beginner"

I started w/ Red Hat, and still use it. I find it good. Another distro for Linux n00bs is Mandrake. Just tinker with each one and see what you like best.

never really cared for RH, especially now that AOL owns it, mandrake is the easiest if your new to linux, i personally use Debian 2.2r5, been using debian for 6 months, before that i used SuSe, which is also a real nice distro.

When did AOL acquire Red Hat? I thought that was just a rumor.

Go with Debian, why bother with a Windows alternative when you could have a pure UNIX OS?

You could also give Libranet a try ( www.libranet.com )

It's a Debian hybrid with a ease of use twist.
