I am running windows 98, and i have a Speed stream DSL modem, and i am wanting to know how i can tweek my reg. so that i can speed up my connection and ect. Can anyone give me some pointers?
Please click in my signature where it says TCP/IP Analyzer Test tweak here, then:
At top where it says edit click and select, Select all,
Then go back to same edit button at top, click and select copy.
Come back to Speed Guide, same thread you were on, in post reply box, with cursor blinking at begining of box go to top, edit, click, select paste, click, this will put information in box. Please X out your IP address, Thank you.:)
Ok thanks, ill have to do that when i get home. Cause i am at school on a T1 line. Ill get home around 2:30pm Pac time.
Thanks
TCP options string = 0204059c01010402
MTU = 1476
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput. If you are using a router, it could be limiting your MTU regardless of Registry settings.
MSS = 1436
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1436, which is equal to MSS.
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 65535
Note: Under Windows 9x, if you have RWIN set to any other value, and the Analyzer reports 65535 you might need to install the MS Vtcp386 fix.
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
505472 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
252736 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
126368 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63184 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2621.4 kbps (327.675 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1048.56 kbps (131.07 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 57 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
Hope you don't mind if I use your post. Here is my info.
I am running Win 98 and I am going through a Linksys 4 port Wireless router. I have Direct TV DSL. Any tweaks that will work for me will be appreciated.

I have been following this forum for a while, but I am still a newbie to tweaking. I will try to help until LOBO wakes up. heh heh:D
First thing I would do is check at the linksys website and make sure you have the latest firmware for your router. The older firmware limits your MTU. With the mew firmware you can raise it to 1500.
Secondly you need to download this patch:
http://www.speedguide.net/files/vtcp386/236926USA8.EXE
This is the patch referred to in you tcp analyzer. After that reboot and download the SG TCP Optimizer here:
http://speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe
Once you have done that select your type of connection and select your adapter. Then click on optimal settings and hit apply. then run your analyzer test again.
Good luck!!!
Good advice but the Vtcp patch is included in Optimizer, won't hurt to put in twice:)

Hey there Lobo!! Good mornin!:D
Like I said I am new, but I am soaking up all the good advise I see. Didn't know the patch was in there. Do Now though..heh heh
Talk to ya
All patches on patch page are included except that old @home patch, coffee, Mmmmm:)
Put Optimizer on all puters in your network, Tcp Recieve Window does not have to be the same for each computer:)
Quick question about the Firmware.
When I download and open the exe I get the following.
There is a blank to input a server. I am assuming that this is for my router's IP which is xxxxxxxxx
I might be wrong on this.
Next is my pass which I assume is the default pass for my router which is admin.
I have the program opening upgrade.pdf which came with the zip.
I have the router using the factory presets (I haven't changed any settings since I have had it) and when I try to upgrade the firmware it just sets on the upgrade screen and says this may take a long time. I waited about an hour and it hadn't done anything so I am assuming that it isn't working.
Hopefully I just messed up one of the settings and it can easily be fixed.
Thanks for any help that you can give.
I don't know how to install firmware as I am on cable, there should be directions where you got it, hopefully or maybe someone else here knows:)
Please edit out the IP number please

That .pdf file is your instructions. You will need to download the adobe acrobat viewer to read it,,,You can find it at
http://www.adobe.com/
Basically,, if I remember,,, when you double click on the upgrade file you need to enter the ip address for your router(default is 192.168.1.1),, Then your password( default is admin) and then the location of the file that you downloaded that has a .bin extension. It should be in the same place the upgrade .exe file you downloaded is.
the important part is to tell the upgrade program where the .bin file is
Let me know....
Thanks guys. It worked and thanks to travelin man for the help with the firmware.
My new results.

Ok, thanks I just did that. Now if I wanted to tweak my other system which is running XP home edition would it be the same kinds of things?
