Hi. I just installed a linksys 10/100 ethernet card, and I can't get the network log-on. I've removed and reinstalled the adapter, the tcp/ip protocal binded to the card, and client for Microsoft Network. My other computer worked fine (win 98). This one is Win 98 se. If I intall NetBEUI, the network logon appears. However, I want to share the internet connection using the internet connection sharing software through the win 98se computer, so I need TCP/IP protocal to be used. (If I just have NetBEUI intalled on the 98se one, but not the other, the network does not work, even with TCP/IP intalled on both. It's a peer to peer network, with a crossover cable). It works with NetBEUI installed on both; hence, it seems that they are comunicating via NetBEUI, but not TCP/IP. I had @home Comcast on the 98se computer, and could not get the uninstall to work. I think it put a bunch of stuff in my registry, but I'm not sure. Maybe some policy stuff. I think I found some policy dll in the @home stuff in my registry, but I'm not sure. Any help? Thanks.

Welcome to SpeeGuide.net...

Do you have a program, such as TweakUI, or selected an option to automatically log on?

Try logging off and see if you are presented with the computer logon box again.

Also, is file/printer sharing enabled on both systems (two check boxes somewhere under the network properties).

I've tried that a couple of times. When I log off, it just gives me the windows logon, not the network logon. I do have print and file sharing enabled. I don't have tweekui installed, and I don't think I have anyprogram to automatically log on.

Phil It's been a while since I've tampered with 98, so forgive me if I'm wrong, but I believe they are one and the same. If you log into the compter with at least a user name (i.e. don't just hit cancel), you should be able to utilize LAN resources. All computers to be used on the LAN will need to be logged into with a username, preferably a unique one. Also, you need to share drives.

I'm pretty sure they are two different logons. When I do it with my other computer, it gives met the network logon, and on this one, it only gives me the windows logon. When I intalled NetBEIU, it gives me the network logon on this one (a different logon). On the command prompt, typing net view, it gives me error 3787 You must log on before preforming this operation. Does the @home software autologon? If so, how do I get rid of it? Thanks.

Phil My guess is it's the @Home software.

There's a commad you can run from the run box (search this forum, as I can't remember what it is) that disables a lot of annoyances produced by the @Home software, but I'm not sure if it will remedy this problem. It would be best to unistall it and never install it again. Although, if you can't get the uninstall to work...not sure what to tell you.

Is the computer you are having problems with viewable by the other computer on the LAN (Network Neighborhood)?

Can you ping the troublesome computer and get a response?

Are the LAN NICs setup dynamically (auto assigned IPs) or statically (IPs manually entered into TCP/IP stack)

I think I'm confused.... you mean you don't have this in your network dialogue box??

http://home.rochester.rr.com/twwonline/files/logon.gif There we go, that's the setting I remember.

If set to Windows Logon, you will automatically be logged on when you logon to windows.

No. I have those protocals installed, including client for microsoft networks. The computer never logs on the network. If I click on network neighborhood, I won't even see my computer in the neigborhood. If I use find computer (by name), I can find it. If I click on it, I can't access it, because I'm not logged on the network. It's the box where you enter your user name and password. It say's enter your network password for microsoft networking. I've tried both dynamic and static addresses, but it does not make a difference. Thanks.

Phil Does your NIC show up with any "?" or "!" under Device Manager?

Are both computers in the same workgroup?

Does each PC have a unique name?

Try cleaning the registry (http://www.createwindow.com/wininfo/regclean.htm) and deleting all of the .pwl files.

Hola. There are no problems in device manager (question mark or x), shows working properly with no conflicts. They are both in the same workgroup. I'll try the reg cleaner (used the one with norton, will try that link. Thanks.

Well, I finnaly got the network logon. I went through my registry looking for anything with @home on it, and deleting it (after I backed it up, of course). It finally worked, partially. If I specify an IP address in the TCP/IP that is bound to my network card, I will get the network logon, and the network works fine. If I specify it to optain IP address automatically, I don't get it anymore. Any idea what is going on? thanks

What are you using to hand out dhcp? Are you behind a router?

No. It's not behind a router. I was thinking it would be the internet sharing software that is bundled with win98se. The directions said to set it up that way, but I later read somewhere else to assign IP's. Would that make a difference with the nework logon? It didn't seem to make a difference on the win98 computer. I still think @home put a bunch of trash on my computer that I can't get rid of, but I'm not sure. Thanks.

Try using the internet connection wizard and select the check boxes for lan. I used ICS to connect a win 95 to a win 98se and it would just stop connecting. If i used the connection wizard on the client machine it would connect again no prob. It seemed to stop working if i just thought about looking in the network settings on the win 95 client.
