View Full Version : Networking a satellite connection.
I have a friend that lives in the boonies and recently bought a Hughes 2 way internet satellite system do to nothing else but dial up available. He is wanting to network 2 computers together using this connection. Both computers are running XP. He said that the satellite connection is thru usb. I don't know much more about it since I haven't seen it yet. He said that it has 2 modems (1 for download and 1 for upload) which join in 1 connection for the usb. I need to know what would be the best and most resonable solution to connect both computers together. The computers are only 25 ft apart and hard wiring is an option. The guy who installed it said he could put in a wireless network system on them for $400. I need to know if there are any other options. I am sorry I do not have any more info but hopefully this is enough to receive some help.
TIA,

Bump.... I need help....please.
Actually, I did hear where someone came out with a USB router. Not sure who it was...Until someone else jumps in here, try http://www.practicallynetworked.com/ or you could also try searching on google.
Thanks for the reply. I have actually looked at that site. I didn't see much help for my situation. You mentioned a usb router. I don't know if this will work, but I would like to find more info to see. That is what I wanted to do, to keep it simple. I suppose if I have to, I can use the main computer as a gateway for the other computer. I saw somewhere, software they have to share connection this way for a satellite system. Thanks again. I am going down there next week, and I needed as much info as I can get, before getting there.

i can help u.. this is what i do at my job. heh.. i actually work tech support for two-way satellite.
in order for it to work u have to set one as the host and the other(s) as client(s)
i actually just did this last friday with win2000pro and winme machines.
we had to write a script to guide customers thru it. screenshots and all. if u like i will just send the entire script to ur email. win2000 is very much like XP specially with the ICS (internet connection sharing) although XP implements there own firewall. ICF.
of course if u want to share any folders with the other computers on network. just selelct it > right click > properties > sharing tab > share this folder.
I received the info N-Talekt . Thanks!!! That was just what I needed.
