Hey guys,
I sent an invitation for Mr Corey Bridges, who is
Chief Editor of E-Communities
Zone Labs, Inc.
To come and visit our site.
His job is to improve relations and communication between his company and members of forums such as ours. :)

He has a great deal of knowledge and help on Zone Alarm, and he may be able to set some of the interested people up in their beta testing, etc.

It is probably better for him to explain! :)

Welcome to SpeedGuide, Corey!

He should be stopping by soon!
Take care,
Ken

Hello Mr Bridges, have a question for ya.

Zone Alarm ever gonna make a port probe of sorts? Something you could sit there and scan yer OWN ports, so you could plug any potential backdoors for a would be hacker? I have looked about for one for some time, found a few, but they always threw so much lingo at me, I gave up. Something easy, for the less techinically inclined. Thanks fer yer time.

Hey there, Mr. Bridges.

I have a question for you about your TrueVector service. I have heard about the fact that this does 'call home' every few days. Is there any substance to this rumor, and if so, does ZoneAlarm police itself enough to catch it?

-Thank you.

Under Control Panel/Performance and Maintanence/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer/Application, I get a number of errors that are related to True Vector. For example:

Type : Error
Date : 25/02/2002
Time 9:44pm
Source : True Vector Service
Category : None
Event : 1
User : N/A

When I double click on one of those errors, I get this:

"The description for Event ID(1) in Source (True Vector Service) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE = flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. Teh following information is part of the event:.

0028: 61 6d 65 64 20 00 amed .

I have 15 instances of this today! and I installed it today. I am willing to buy the product but this has to be resolved.

I also get a strange problem with Sierra/Halflife/TFC. When I play on-line, my mouse character 'view' will only look in one area if I try to move the character with the keyboard. When I don't use the keyboard, I can view properly with the mouse. The game has full access and can act as a server. As soon as I shutdown Zonealarm, the game works fine.

New trial version 2.6.362, true vector 2.6.362.

I also seem to have a problem in which Outlook Express will not send/recieve if I have Zonealarm on, even if I indicated full access for Outlook Express.

AntiVirus being used in Norton 2002.

Any suggestion, comments?

Hey there, Mr. Bridges.

What are the qualifications needed to become a beta tester?

I would also like to say thank you for providing a free version for us of little means($$) to use. It has come in very handy.

Mr. Bridges, I am beginning to sell true low computer systems. What steps would I need to take so that I may include ZAP as part of a secutiy package?

Hello Mr. Bridges,
It is welcome to see such support from a software company!
I have no real negative issues with Zone Alarm Pro. I have been using the free version for a long time and I finally decided it was the Firewall of choice for me, so I purchased the retail version of 2.6. I have lately upgraded to the newly released 3.06 version.
Very nice!
My only question is, in Windows XP Professional, Zone Alarm takes a very long time to completely load and show the icon in my system tray. I have no errors whatsoever, and I can access all internet locations with High Security in place.
Can you possibly explain any reason it takes so long to load?
If it is relative to an answer, I am running Internet Explorer 6.0 browser, my connection is Comcast Cable Internet through Ethernet LAN NIC card. I keep very few programs in my "Start Up" and Zone Alarm is the very last one to finish loading. Prior versions were much much faster to load.
Thanks for your answer and time in advance, and Welcome to SpeedGuide!

Mr. Bridges: I just wanted to say thanks to you and the other folks at ZoneLabs for an excellent product, and a very excellent upgrade with the recent release of 3.0. It's nice to purchase top-notch software without having to consider a second on the house. :D

I have used your software (Pro version) through 98, ME and now into XP and have had no issues or problems with it at all and the improvements have all been for the good. The new 3.0 is especially nice with the ad/popup blockers and the much more comprehensive reports it gives.

A definite three thumbs up. Good job!

Like SilverDakota, I have used ZAP through all those OS's and I think it is really cool. So many people say it isnt any good and that Tiny is better but, I disagree.

I just got Version III also and it is Awesome... it r0x0rs.. :D

Steve Gibson is the person that turned my Dad on to it a LONG time ago and we have NEVER been sorry. :)

Just a sidenote here that in ZA's new Ad Blocking options, when choosing Animation under the Ads To Block, it will stop all the animated emoticons (smilies) from being animated.

When I installed ZA pro 3.0 the only concern I have is it opens TCP Port 1025 or a random usually above 1024. Here is the answer I got my sales rep:

I just heard back from my Tech Support Rep about your inquiry: the TCP port
ZoneAlarm and ZoneAlarm Pro listens on (Port 1024) is basically for
registration and automatic updates purposes. ZoneAlarm "listens" on this
port to see if updates are available.

Any idea why it has to maintain that open port? I dont feel safe with having that open all the time. Once the hackers find out about it, might use it to exploit.

Hi, everyone--

Thanks very much for the kind words. Ken got everything right about me except when he said that I have "a great deal of knowledge"! I'm actually moderately technical, but I'll often go running to other folks here when I get stuck--which is not infrequently! What I'm spending most of my time doing right now is getting our new Team Z program up and running. I'll start another thread about that, in a little bit.

So! To business:

Brembo: Right now, we don't have any plans to make a port probe.

Paft: ZoneAlarm will only "call home", as you say, if you explicitly specify that it "Check for Updates".

Stealth: I've just sent you an email that should hopefully cover what you describe. Let me know if it doesn't help!

S1lv3r: Sorry I didn't get back to you while the beta period was open. I've just sent your email address and handle to our beta coordinator.

CiscoCert: Are you saying that you want to sell low-end systems that include ZAP? Sounds like a legal issue, if you want to resell software installed on it. A bit beyond my area of expertise, HOWEVER, I'm guessing that the free version--ZoneAlarm, not Pro, would allow you to not worry about resale issues.

Mike_W: The long load time is a bug we're working on right now. I've been told that we should have a fixed version online in the next couple weeks.

SilverDakota: Thanks for the extra digit!

Ashdaw & Radpike: Thanks!

davy19: That does sound odd. I'll check on it and get back to you.

And finally, to everyone--please: call me Corey! :)

Are you sure that you don't have "Check for updates" checked...

Welcome Corey!
As you can see, we have many ZA users around here. It is a prefered recommendation to people new to puter security, as it comes out of the box ready to rock... ;)

We are a big family around here, so kick your shoes off and make yourself at home! :) We are glad to have you!

Thanks for visiting Corey! Was just earlier wondering when you would be by. I'll keep a look out for the next ZA update. That loading time is my only issue! Great product!

Corey, what I meant was low cost systems instead of the 1200.00 things at OfficeMax and other retailers. These systems would be by no means low end, about the worst thing on them would be the video card at a small 16 megs on them...

Thanks for the info.

Corey

One more quick question. I am trying to arrange a meeting of SG members within California, would it be possible to tour the ZoneLabs facilities and if so, can you e-mail me the needed information at ellopez@familygiftshowcase.com

Thank you Corey for the technical excerpt on a possible cause and effect but as you noted, it may be related to a resovable solution in the near future.

Thanks again:D

is it too late to be a beta tester?

i've been using zone every since it came out

also a member of #nohack on IRC

Yes I unchecked it..in fact I never had it checked.

I dont understand why it would need that opened.

My other complaint would be that someone else said is that it takes a real long time to start up when booting up your PC. I do like the ad and cookie blocker, they seem to work real well.

Now running into other issues I am finding with almost a week of using ZA Pro 3.0

My machine is sometimes will slow down like it is locked up, but I can still navigate, but extremely slow, once I turn Za pro off, everything goes back to normal.

It is starting to become a nuisance, and at first did not realize it was Za. If I cannot find a fix soon I wil probably go back to the old version until the bugs are fixed.

Hopefully Mr Bridges you will see this. It is from a guy I know that is having a weird problem with ZA 3.0. He has Emailed support and is still waiting for a reply. He has been waiting for 4 days so far, maybe YOU can help him please??. :)

ZoneAlarm Pro 3.0 - Sometimes not detecting LAN properly
ZoneAlarm sometimes does not detect my LAN connection properly, After it has been disconnected for a while

When it has been disconnected for a while, ZoneAlarm removes the LAN from the network list

But then doesnt redetect it when it is re-connected (this seems to be happening pretty much everytime the LAN is removed from the list)

So i either have to restart ZoneAlarm, restart the computer, or just re-logon

I do not encounter this problem with my Dial-Up connection

If i get disconnected from the net, I can reconnect again, And it will update/put the Dial-Up entry back in the network list again

What could be causing this problem with not detecting the LAN?

PS: This only happens ofcourse when the LAN is removed from the list, If the LAN is disconected, then reconnected, BUT the LAN connection was already still in the list, Then, No problems
Is there a way to keep the LAN connection in the network list permanently & Prevent ZoneAlarm from removing it?

BTW, he runs Win XP pro........ Thanx :D

the version of Zone Alarm Pro i'm using now is 3.0.081

in this version, whenever I have the ad blocking enabled, banner ads from sites get messed up, IE, look distorted, or have other graphics from other sites' ads on them, weather I have the ad blocking on High, Medium or Off.

Also, recently, its been having a problem with my cookies here at Speedguide. WHen I have ZAP enabled, I get logged out, and cannot log back in, until I disable zone alarm.

Now, there is a new version avaiable, I just haven't downloaded it yet...but do you or anyone else know of these problems, and does the new version fix that?

thanks for your time.
