Are you talking about your WAN IP? Or LAN IP?

WAN IP..only matters if you need to run servers or host services which people hit from the road, such as VPN, PcAnywhere, website, etc. That way you avoid the difficulty of trying to hit a moving and unknown target.

LAN IP...I find it's much more reliable to assign static IP,gateway, and DNS, over the basic DHCP services of a router. I just don't have the problems I see others having doing it this way. Or if there's an NT server on the network to oversee TCP with it's DHCP, I use that. But I find routers DHCP not to be very robust or reliable.
