View Full Version : Can't access a certain site!!!
I'm trying to access the site www.neweclipse.org on my computer, but I can' seem to connect to it I cant even ping the site.
I'm on a lan with a 4 port Linksys Router.
My computer is running windows 2000 Pro, another computer running Win 98se on the lan also has the same problem. A third computer on the lan running XP Home can access the site with no problems.
I used to be able to connect fine, and I can still surf other sites perfectly fine. I have checked all my TCP settings, and they all seem to be ok. I have also tried fowarding ports, and placing my computer in the router DMZ....but still nothing!!! I've even re-formated from an NTFS partition to a Fat32. I really dont feel like backing up more files, re-fdisking, and re-formating the MBR. only to find out I still cant access this site.
I think I'm going to try by-passing the router physically, and if that doesn't work...I'll re-format EVERYTHING...
Any tips are greatly appreciated.

I was able to reach the site, but pings are blocked.
Their domain name record was just updated yesterday, which suggests that they might have been moving a server or something.

Yeah but why would certain computers on the same network not be able to access the site, while others can with no problems?
The only time I have ever seen that problem before was when the hosts file had some entries in it that was causing the problem. I cleared all the entries out and it worked fine.
What file is that then???
just do a search for "hosts" without the quotes and open it in notepad.

Fanta, try this,
Create another account on you machine with admin rights and log on with that account. Then right click My Computer and use Explorer to navigate to the Content IE5 folder of the account you normally use. Delete everything in that folder including the index.dat file. You'll get a warning everytime you try and delete a folder, don't worry Windows will recreate them. The reason you need to make another account is Windows won't let you delete the index.dat file of the account you are logged on with. These folders hold info on every site you've ever been to, even if you clear your temporary internet files.
*edit* Delete all of the cookies too, you'll see the evil index.dat file in that folder too. :D

fanta, I must apologize for suggesting something that caused you so many problems. I've deleted those folders on many PC's and do it on my pc on a regular basis. I'm sorry man.
I can get to the site, and after a reformat if you can't get to it, I would try calling you ISP and see if they can help you. It looks to me like your setup is right ( I can even ping your DNS servers)
Try running a tracert and see where it stops or try typeing http://66.45.33.213/ into your browser and see if it opens the page. If it opens, you have some sort of DNS problem in your PC or with your ISP.
Here's what my tracert looks like.

Tracerts are the same on both computers on the Lan, except the other comp can access the site and I cant!
Think I should call my ISP up?
I dont even know if the tech-support staff here would even comprehend such an issue (no offense to the local RR techs...but most of these people are chics who aren't into computers anyways)

glc1, I hear you....
I was thinking the same thing.
Gee, allow me to use the bandwith I pay for every month to my discretion...you must be kidding right?
Here are some more configuration settings I managed to pluck up without sharing my net connection. These settings were taken from the factory RR setup!

I reformated and still cant access the site...with or without a router. It has to be something with Windows 2000 and the site...
Are you using a bookmark or typing directly into the address bar? I use W2k and can access the site just fine.
