There is a new firmware out which includes "stealth" mode and other new features. Just log into your router as the administrator and click the button in the upper left marked "Update Firmware".

A few long awaited features have been added.

hey Twisted
I notice that you are using a NETGEAR router.
I am trying to change my SMC and the Netgears appear very good, with some similarities to the infamous SOHO with SPI and VPN.
Could you provide some feedback on your model?
The ones which caught my eye was the FR314 & FR318... if you have any opinions on them please let me know.
The SMC keeps dropping my connections, and apparently that is a known problem with them, especially with DSL connections with PPPOE. I am hoping the the NETGEARS don't exhibit that annoying flaw.
Thanks for you time.

Hey Fredra,

I have been using the Netgear FR314 for about a year now and have had no problems with it at all. I am a cable modem user with 3 PC's (two desktop and one laptop) and my conection speeds on all three are consistently good and stable. The new firmware which was just released has some great features which add to the security of the firewall portion of the router (stealth mode is a great example). I highly recommend this firewall/router.

I hope this helps in your decision. I had a linky in the past and now prefer Netgear (also own a Netgear PCCard and 2 NIC's...great products !!)

Hey Twisted
Thanks for your advice.
I picked up a NEXLAND PRO400 (up here they give a discount to Sympatico Users, so I took advantage of their offer).
It beats my SMC Router and the LINKSYS I use at work...I can get multiple sessions of VPN's and with all tests it shows "stealthed" ports, as opposed to my SMC which leaves Port 80 and 113 closed....the PRO400 has ALL stealthed.
I did look at the NETGEAR FV314 with SPI, nice router...similiar to the SOHO2.
Again, I appreciate your input.
Take Care.
