This is probably not the best place to ask this question -- how does this relate to Internet Tweaking? However...
It sounds like your removal procedure was not completely effective. The Comet Browser Helper Object was likely left behind and is interfering with the operation of IE.
Perhaps the simplest way to deal with this is to get a BHO remover like BHO Cop (http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,10615,77432,00.html). I would give this a try first.
Let's get you over to security forum...

Run BHOcop and if you still have problems, try Ad Aware. It is free, but make sure to get the most recent reference list update.
Run the program and be sure to back up anything that the program finds before removing it.
Ad Aware and most recent reflist (http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/index.html)
You probably got that crap software with Real Player!
Comet Uninstaller available from Comet here on this page (http://www.cometsystems.com/privacy/software/ccrp7.html)
