View Full Version : Changing from Comcast Cable to PPPoE DSL
I am going to be using the SpeedStream 5360 modem which uses PPPoE. I also have a Linksys router that supports PPpoE. My question is this: Will I have to install the software even though my router already supports PPPoE? How does the router "Dial in" to the PPPoE? Is this an automatic thing? My ISP states in the user guide that after 24 hours online that I will need to reconnect. I guess they disconnect you on a time schedule. How will I reconnect (keep in mind I will be connected through the router). Will this be as simple as rebooting my PC? I appreciate any help offered.

The firmware in your Linksys router supports/emulates PPPoE. You'll see on your routers web admin setup page, scroll down a bit, there's a checkbox for PPPoE, once you check that, you'll see where you fill in your PPPoE Username and Password. Also if your firmware is at least, 1.36 or 1.37, there's a checkbox you can fill in for "Keep Alive"...so when your ISP forces a lease renewal "every 24 hours"...the router will automatically log back on again for you, making your connection appear seamlessly "always on".
Stay away from the latest firmware, 1.42.3, lots of people having issues with it. Firmware earlier than 1.36 or so may not be fully compatible with the PPPoE of some ISP's....so upgrading it may be necessary for you.
Do not install your ISP's PPPoE software on any computers connected to the router, uninstall any if you did, it can conflict with the PPPoE of the router and prevent it from working correctly.
Thank you very much for the support. So after I fill in my username and password on the router, all I should have to do is open my browser (IE) and I should be surfing?

8) In the navigation bar type: "http://192.168.1.1" then hit "Enter" on your keyboard
9) Leave the "User Name" field blank and type "admin" as "Password" then click "OK"
10) Check off "Enable" beside the "PPPoE" header. Enter your "User Name" (for your user name make sure you include your ISP's domain as part of it. I.E.: for Verizon it would be userid@verizon.net) and "Password" as supplied by your ISP. Check off "Enable" under "Connect on Demand" Then click on "Apply"
11) Surf Away!
