comcast monitoring usage?

What the heck?! I was watching my local news and they were saying how comcast is now monitoring customers internet usage. Whats the deal here?

The new Comcast networkwas configured with transparent proxies that tracked the source and destination IP addresses of all net surfing activity. The intent was to optomize the network and perhaps provide marketing data on usage. It was never done, and I do not believe that they had any intention of doing so at a level that would identify the individual customer. There were numerous complaints about this as well as about the difficulties with the proxies, and when it became public they were foreced to drop them.
