We have the ability to opt-out of targeted advertising from the four main online companies: Doubleclick, Avenue A, 24/7, and L90. Check out this site:

Thanks for the link, Partial.
What has to be realised here is that to "OPT OUT" of advertising in this way involves the placing of an "OPTOUT" cookie for each of the advertisers in your Cookie Folder.
This will have to be repeated every time you carry out hygiene on your system. A far better way to do this is to use a "HOSTS" file and a small program that will manage this task is called AdShield from www.adshield.org.
Add to this a scanner called AdAware from www.lavasoft.de and a Cookie manager such as CookieWall from www.analogx.com and your system will remain clean, providing these are used all the time.

Hope this helps.
