ok went to my friends house cuz he got dsl and we set up the splitter then filter to phone and dsl line straight to splitter.
the speedstream 5060 or whatever modem's pwr, dsl, and eth lights go on and act light blinks but when renewing the IP address it says teh dhcp service is unavailable.
also the phones are VERY staticy.
now he's being stupid and wont call snet for some reason so i am only really worried about teh static issue

Yah, line noise can hamper it quite a bit. Work without the splitter?
The Speedstream 5260/5261's are good modems, I've used them the most.
Using a router? Or PPPoE software?

ethernet card adn tcp ip
i never installed dsl before, can u give me a more detailed walk through?
1: You have to put a filter on every phone. That should get rid of the static.
2: Turn off your computer, router switch.
3: With EVERYTHING hooked up turn one componant on at a time starting with you modem. Once that trains, turn everything on turning your computer on last. You should be ready to rock..

With "most" DSL setups, ISP's will require a username and a password. If so, then you need PPPoE software, or a router which supports PPPoE, which just about all do. A couple of the better ISP's do not use PPPoE, or anything, just set to obtain IP, and you're all set. No MAC, no host name, no username/password...that is called PPPoA. If you aren't using a router, then just load the software that his ISP shipped him, like Enternet300, or WinPoet (PPPoE software). Just treat PPPoE like a special dial up adapter, it's just log on software for authentication.
An those filters....only use them on the telephones IF there is huge static. On over a hundred DSL installs I've done, I think I've only used those filters in about 5 cases. Hardly ever really need them. Never put them on the DSL modem. I've only needed them on the telephones once or twice, the other times I've used them is if the DSL line is the same as the fax line in an office, fax machines don't like excessive noise. Usually it's a high pitched buzzing or humming on the DSL line, not static noise. The filters are mostly for the high pitch noise.
