Hi

I have just signed up for cable modem NTL world`s 512kbs service, i expected constant D/L speeds of about 100kbs but i am actually getting around 50kbs, my modem is attatched through USB rather than an Ethernet card, i was just wondering , i do quite alot of video encoding where my CPU runs at 100% for quite long preiods of time, as the modem is attatched through USB would the speed of the modem be affected by the CPU being drained by the video encoding, also is it possible because we have cable TV to somehow split the cable going into my PC to a TV card.

T.I.A for any help.

Welcome to speed guide!

Let's drop the abbreviations so we're sure that wer talking apples and apples.

Your connection is rated at 512kilobits/second. That is the same as 64kilobytes/second.

If the 50k you get is measured by a download program, it is in bytes, so you're not doing bad.

Try our tweaking forum, the tweaks under Cable Modems, Tweaks and patches, and the Analyzer and Optimizer.

You're using a proxy. You'll want to turn it off to make any significant measurements.
