View Full Version : I've joined.. have a couple of questions.
Hello all,
I just signed up for the Genome team and I have it running on my main computer. I have a couple of questions. First, I installed the program I saw in one of the post to have the prog run in the background. Once I set this up, is there anything else I need to do, or do I just let it run? Second, since I have multiple computers, can I set it up on each one and let it run, since I hardly ever turn any of them off unless I have a problem.
Thanks,

Configure it first, then run it in the background
yes you can run the program on as many computers as you wish. Welcome to the Teams!
Well I set it up on 3 of my 4 comps, and it brought my speed down drastically. Looks like I will just keep it running 24/7 on my file server computer. I can afford to lose some bandwith for a good cause.

Welcome and things from jumping on the Team.
G@H should not impact your speed or bandwidth. Looks like you are running XP so yes you can run it in the background 24X7 on all your boxes. I run it on this box and my son's sharing a cable modem with an SMC Router and it does not cause any problem. The only time it might is when uploading/downloading work and that only takes a minute or two or less.
This thread gives you a link to some good tools to set it as a service and also install a monitor that you can oversee all your boxes.

I would really like to hear why and or how you see a slowdown while running G@H.
Thank again for climbing aboard !

I have 4 computers linked together with a D-Link 704 router and dsl connection. I loaded the software on 3 of them and my speeds from dfw.speakeasy.net went from 1480/380 to 1150/140. I then stopped the prog on each computer 1 by 1 and each time the speed increased again back until it was back to original speed. On 2 of my computers I am running XP, but I am running Win 98se on the other 2. I notice that several people talk about the program running in the background, but I guess I need to do more reading. I installed FireDaemon but the prog still runs on my desktop and I can only minimize it to the tool bar. I don't know if it is the way I have my router setup, the software installed,or what but I do see a big decrease in speed when it is running, especially on multiple comps. If anyone has any suggestions of how I can run the prog on all of my computers without loosing as much bandwith, I am open for suggestions. The more comps running the better.

Well let's tackle one thing at time:
Using FireDaemon (2000/XP): You should use the "UI" option and set it to start automatically leaving the interact/start immed/auto restart/ boxes blank. This will add it the services and it will start and stop at shutdown/boot and you'll never even see it, no "dos" box nothing.
Once you reboot you can then see it in services or the task manager under processes. Right now I have my ATI TV tuner running watching the Olypmics plus IE and it show shows ghclient @ 80% of cpu. It speeds up/down depending on what's running.
In 98 you do have to run it in the dos box minimized but it still should impact your system. I run it at work on 98 24X7 with only 128 Ram with some pretty busy activity thru lan to our AS400's and it just rolls along.
At home all this runs on is my P3 800 and the son's 900 Celeron and I test at 1375 to 1480 depending on time.
Try walking thru this on one and let's see what you get.

I don't genome so I may be a little off base here but when you setup FireDaemon make sure you start your genome executable to run at idle not normal CPU priority. Now Genome may spawn another process that forces the system to use Idle settings but LukeMan and the rest of the genomers would know better than me. I know that folding2 does spawn a new process and they could have stolen that idea from the genome guys. :)

Actually, no it doesn't do that, but it's a good point. Thanks btracy for bringing it up.
When you check the task manager right click and choose 'set priority', it should always be set to "LOW" any higher and yes, it will affect your system.

Thanks guys for the help. I finally got it to run in the background at startup. I did a speed test with it running on 2 comps and it is still at normal speeds now. Again thanks for all the help. I have plenty of resources on my main computer to run it without even knowing it is there, but lets see how long my old K6-2 450 can run it until it crashes.:D Again, thanks!

Hi btracy,
Nice to meet you. I see you are a neighbor of mine. I live in Kennedale, which might as well be in Arlington.

I was happy to join. It is for a good cause, and I like the people here at speedguide. So if I needed to join, I couldn't think of a better team than speedguide. I have been running the program on all 4 of my computers for a week and no problems. My K6-2 is even still plucking along. Again thanks for everyone's help and welcomes.
