Port 139 netbios-->"open"

Hi all,

When I do a port scan on my system, it says that port 139 is open. I have TP firewall installed,running cable internet on Win ME. When probing ports, I deny all access to probe scanner but it continues to find port 139 open no matter what I try.
Is this connected to windows sharing? If so, how do I unbind this so that my port 139 is in "stealth" mode. All my other ports show "stealth" except 139.
If someone can explain this or guide me to a web site that deals with open port 139 and how to correct it would be greatly appreciated. Microsoft :(

I just dumped Tiny firewall for the Sygate model and have found that this model closed my port 139 automatically and found a breach in port 5000 Microsoft plug and play. I downloaded the plug and pray from www.grc.com and installed it which instantly plugged the hole in port 5000.
Now, when I run different port scanners on the net, I am completely "stealth" in all ports. :D

So far, I love the new Sygate personal firewall!!!

Best way to close port 139 is to unbind TCP\IP protocol from all in Network control applet except do not unbind from the network card adapter itself. But definitely unbind it from File & Print Sharing. Use NetBeui for file & print sharing.

That'll do it.
Unbind TCP\IP from the Client for MS Networks as well.
When asked if you want to bind TCP\IP with something, since it's not bound to anything, say NO !

But as TonyT said, leave TCP\IP bound to the network adapter, or you won't be able to get online.

Try this. It worked for me in W98 and was real easy.

Start > Find > Files/Folders and enter.. *vnbj.386* (without the **) in the searchbar.

When it is located, rename it *vnbj.old* (w/out the **) and scan the ports again. That should close it but may not stealth it.
