View Full Version : 2 machines , same address?
i am trying to run 2 PC's off the same cable connection with g@home. my older box is a whole lot slower so i just unplug the modem from it till i want to upload from it and let it do its thing and let it run for a few days.
my new PC i only run it when i am home , do i need to make 2 different accounts 'cause i hate to be running the same genes twice ??
or when they access the server do they both get different genes to run???

When installed G@H it should have created different "User ID's" that have the same User Name.
The first time you run the client and enter your user name it connects to download a WU it gets a user id number like 824087593928685274. I'm not sure where it's stored. I run Genome Spy to monitor my my box and and my boy's over my router / cable connection and it shows the user ids.
If you want to try Genome Spy you can find it here....

ps......if that comes up in German click English on the upper right.
well i put that gnome spy thing in and now g@home will not work on my my new PC , so i uninstalled it but when i go to reinstall it it says there is allready my user name registerd.
it still works on my old PC but i want to get it back on my new PC and keep my same name .
please advise :)

Sorry to be slow to respond. All the kids and grandkids in for the weekend.
Genome Spy should not effect you running G@H. It is only a monitor nothing more. It doesn't care one wit about user names, or id. It simply shows you the progess of each G@H instance.
I take you uninstalled G@H, the client you mean? If you did that you need to completely remove it including the directory. Uninstalling does wipe everything out. Once you have completly removed it, you can then install G@H from the get go.
When you first run G@H it will of course ask for user name, etc. just follow the normal process and it will connect and d/l a workunit. You can have multiple instances of it running on the same machine in different directories, it really doesn't care and all can have the same user name. The name is simply a friendly id I actually have "LukeMan" running on 5 different machines 2 here, sometimes 2 instances at the same time. and 3 at work, the only difference it the user id for which all are different.
Are you running the ramdisk tweak or anything like that? Do you have it running as a service (winxp)? auto start or manual start? You wording doesn't quite convey the problem ....."it says my username is registered". I don't believe the client checks the username, it simply connects, however I think it does check the user id number.
Another way is if the G@H directory still remains it has the "client.cfg" which is the user name and team number. you can copy that to the new G@H directory.
Sorry you seem to have so many problems but it's G@H not Genome Spy all it does is show whats going on.
