I am running mcafee firewall 2.15 with win 98 and as I surf the net I eventually get the dreaded " not enough free memory close applications to continue" then my browser (IE 6) will lock up and do weird things to the current page being viewed. I have 512mb of memory and when the error occurs the system monitor says that I still have at least 256mb of physical UNUSED memory, after closing all running applications and programs in my systray including firewall the system memory will go upto 366mb but my processor will stay at about 75% usage. I have allowed hours to go by to see if the processor usage goes down, but it will straight line at 75% usage even though there is no activity on the computer. I have to restart my computer in order to bring down the usage to normal so I can go back onto the net. Here's the catch, When I close the firewall prior to logging onto the net I can surf for hours with no problem. I know the simple answer is "don't run the firewall" but I would not have bought it if I did'nt want to run it.
Any experts out there on Mcafee firewalls. I would appreciate any help or suggestions.
You might want to send a private message to Storm90.
She may be able to help you with that one if no one else answers this post.
I'm not familiar with Mcafee firewall, so I would be possibly leading you in the wrong direction if I try to help. :(

Sometimes she doesn't answer if she doesn't know who it is. I'll forward this thread in email and see if she's there or not. Outside of this, I suppose you've tried the self help of McAfee, if there is such a thing anymore?

actually there still is a help section on the mcafee site, but it has been of no help. I even talked with a tech in there chat section and he recommended rebooting all software ( which I have) and said that he had never heard of this problem either.
I have tried taking out 1 stick of memory, that didnt work.
I have tried changing virtual memory settings that didnt work.
and I have done configuration changes to the firewall from within itself and that didnt work. Again the only thing that has worked so far is to disable it all together and then I find that I dont experience the error or any other problems.
Thanks again for the help, I have attempted to find info on many other sites but have found none. If I cant fix it I will probably look into another brand of firewall. Any suggestions for a dial-up connection? Any that are reliable and cause no errrrrrrrrrors.
Here is Storm90's reply. She said to try this and let her know if this works.:
Have them go to Mcafee.com and look up the upgrade patch for the firewall. This may help them out. I have Mcafee firewall,But do not use it. I think tiny is alot more stable. Mcafee has never been one of my favorites for firewalls. It does not seem to like the Microsoft Explorer..
Sorry I have not answered sooner, But I have been sick.
If you already have the patch, you may want to try another firewall, but regardless, please let me know how it works out so I can let her know. She likes it when she's able to help. ;)

Thanks alot blebs storm has replied to my private message. I told her that I have applied the upgrade patch and still experiecing the same problem. She has reccommended another firewall.
I think I will be looking at another firewall, I have mcafee virus scan and have not had one problem with it that is why I purchased the firewall, but it stinks.
Again much thanks to YOU for taking the time to help.
Hey, no problem. I, as well as she and many others enjoy helping when we can.
As far as a dial up connection, I've been out of that loop for a long time now. You might ask that one in the General forum and see if someone has a good one to use.

You could try Sygate at www.sygate.com . Easy to configure and dialup is no problem.
If you want another to look at, go to www.agnitum.com and check out Outpost.
Can't offer any help on the MacAfee firewall. Never used it.

Hey thanks everyone for helping out. I have removed mcafee firewall and installed sygate, so far no problems other than knowing how to configure it for optimum security. I am reading up on it in order to configure it right. So far I have had NO crashes or memory errors like mcafee caused.
New to help set up Sygate. Their very own forum!!!!!
http://forums.sygatetech.com./index.php?
And to help setting it up there is also the "unnofficial" Sygate page.

A wealth of info at your disposal at these two sites.
Have fun.
