i dont know what those are can anyone give me some insight like how fast are they

They vary from DS3, 45 megabit per second, over copper, up to OC-192, 10 gigabit over fiber. OC means "Optical Carrier".
The slowest OC is OC-3, 155 mbit. If you multiply the number after OC by 52 it will give you the approximate speed in mbits.

The internet can go about as fast as you can afford it to go.

It can operate up to the speed of whatever circuit is installed. If you are asking about the speed of a connection using several circuits, it is limited to the speed of the slowest circuit in theory. In practice, these speeds are not achieved because there is traffic from many sources, and shaping protocols are used to allocate the capacity.
