ya know, i was thinking of ways to drive membership a tad. i don't think it would translate into huge readership gains (unless advertized), but i think it could drive membership up.

what about offering e-mail services for people/members? it could be free, if the goal is boosting memberhsip/advertizing impressions.

or, perhaps a 1, 2, or 5 year "lease" (for a modest amount) for e-mail services for a fixed price (ideally without needing a credit card as the only way to subscribe). an increased mailbox size (over typical ISP or other free e-mail service providers) could be a big draw. large attachments could be a problem, but there could be rules set regarding that. it could be handled in whatever way, but i am not a big fan of monthly "subscription" services. give me a set amount of time for a set abount of services for a fixed rate. renewable upon completion of the lease.

or what about personal web space or a place to host images?

just some thoughts..........

who would be interested in something of this nature? i know i would. remote e-mail access (web-browser type) would be nice, but not totally mandatory (IMO).

It will take too much money. If we grant 5 mbs to each member here at SG, that's 60000 mbs that SG has to maintain and paid for. I like the idea, but I don't think it will work.

if Speedguide offered a blanket subscription to all members (i would think maybe 20% of ar actively "active") i would have to agree.

however, if it were a pay service (say... $20/year or something like that), storage would be a lesser concern, as the storage media would (ideally) be paid for already. and possibly a 2 week restriction on undeleted e-mails could also assist in the storage/monetary concern.

even though free services would be nice, let's face it. the internet advertizing cash-cow has not proven to be quite as fruitful over the short-term as was once thought.

it very well could wind up being a non-workable idea. i was just interested in seeing if there was interest.

Faust: Your ideas = teh good:D

I'd be more than willing to pay X amount of dollars per year for a @speedguide.net email address, or for a www.speedguide.net/drdoug99 webspace

good idea but i'd say no to it.

i think modernizing the SP pages would help, and adding teh tcp analyzer in a java applet to the site page.

maybe getting more review stuff and do some thorough reviews, even maybe on a more PC hardware level.

if SG wanted to take computer hardware on as more than just a side forum it could go places. there are few places that review hardware well, absolutely none that review it well enough for my needs.

I think it would be cool to offer a Speedguide weekly newsletter...with news and reviews and whatnot. Look at Mike's List or Scott Finnies Newsletter or even Lockergnome's stuff. They are really sucessful because they have a niche in the market. The Speedguide newsletter should complement what Speedguide is all about...system performance teaking with an emphasis on broadband internet connections.

I think Analog X offers a simple list server tool called listmaster pro for email newsletter management.

I think this would be cool....uber cool:D

Indy has a great idea going which I would pay 20 bucks a year for...a speedguide gaming server!!! Now that would kick ass!

I think another feature that would be totally kick ass is the ability to save your SG TCP OPtimizer tweak profile on SG! So if you crash or reformat...all you have to do is to merge that registry profile from online!!!:D WOW!!!! That would be cool as hell....no need to worry about losing your settings....you could have maybe like 5 profiles saved within your account for easy access in case of emergency or whatever.

A tweak tracker would be cool...you know how Microsoft tracks your updates when you go there....why can't Speedguide offer the same thing as it relates to it's own tweaks....it could take a simple snapshot of your tweaks and save them as a profile.

I'm rambling now...goodbye!:D

I contacted Philip about an upgraded SG store selling overclocked system as well as some hardware that were on sale. Say a router goes for 300, Someone sells it for 250, Philip buys it via a fund that we SGers can comeup with, and then sell it for 270.

However, he said that it involves too much work, but if the SG regulars here can help out, I think this idea could really fly. Anybody that could help?

Ohhhh, Mr. Perfect huh!!!!:D lol, jk

Damn....read UOD's post...I totally totally totally totally agree with everything he said. Each suggesstion is awesome!!

I agree with more hardware computer reviews, as well as what YOS said in the rest of his post....make totally customizable reviews maybE? like YOS can give his ideas on what would be good to review/how to review it. and then we review it. yea.

like each week = one different review. We have polls or something on what looks good to review, and the highest number of votes, is the product we review, and we use input from what the members want to see or focus on in the review.

All interesting ideas guys...

OUr first priority is the new server right now, so if you don't see anything implemented soon don't think we're not listening.

Here are a few of the ideas that will be implemented in the near future:
- More routers reviews, daily news...
- There is going to be a mailing list/newsletter implemented
- There is going to be a new T-shirt store with a lot more options within a month.

In the long run we might setup some member email accounts, however we have to be able to filter spam and there are always abuse issues we have to consider. If we ever do that it is probably going to be browser based.

As far as hardware reviews... Our primary focus is networking and tweaking broadband, so we have to cover this before we start doing general hardware reviews. We might setup a section for user reviews soon where you can help with this :)

Game servers - we might setup a permanent game server, problem is what game ? :) ...

Thank you guys for the suggestions, we'll certainly consider every single one :)

DoD :D . or, Counter-Strike. Of course, we would have to keep the anti-cheat updated. CSGuard is the best.

I saw we set up one server for some of the more popular games..:

one Quake III server
one CS server
one UT server

ofcourse I think if that happens it will probably take up too much bandwidth..

OR.....you can take like certain games and host servers on different days of the week....so you can host different games
