does anyone know if u can switch your email without installing the comcast software?
or should i just go ahead and install their software?
NO!! Do NOT INSTALL their hardware! Your email settings can be manually set in your email program. Just go into Options...Accounts...and enter the correct info.
Installing Comcast spftware will only "brand" your software such as Internet Explorer, and also reconfigure your registry settings to LESS than optimal!

Ryan, I'm going to sit right here until someone answers your question. Because I'm in the same boat as you and want to know if I have to install this 13.1mb file I just downloaded from Comcast. Or can I set this up without this crap. Thanks for asking the question. Hope we get an answer soon.

In Outlook Express, go to Tools > Accounts, and select Add > Mail... Follow all the instructions with the following details:
Server: POP3
Incoming Mail Server: mail.comcast.net
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.comcast.net
This is all well and good, but you don't have your password yet for Comcast service, you won't be able to use your Comcast e-mail unless they give to you. According to their web site, that's mid-February. Good luck!

Ok, I feel blessed or at least very lucky. I have not had any problems so far with the Comcast switch over except the severe drop in bandwidth. Here is an email I got on 2/1 and I live in Monmouth County NJ. I did NOT install any software at all from Comcast or @home. All information is put in manually from me and works just fine. I use Outlook Express 6.
Dear Comcast Customer,
Great news! Your Internet service has now been transitioned to the new Comcast
High-Speed Internet network. It is now time to set up your new Comcast e-mail
address. Act now! Your existing Comcast @Home e-mail address will no longer
be accessible after February 28, 2002.
We recommend that you print this e-mail and keep this handy for the installation.
SET UP YOUR COMCAST E-MAIL ADDRESS AND HOMEPAGE - 3 simple steps!
-----------------------------------
Step 1:
GO TO: http://download.comcast.net
FOLLOW: the step-by-step on screen instructions (typical installation takes less
than 10 minutes)
ENTER the following information when prompted:
Account Number or Customer ID Number: 00000-000000-0
User Name/login: xxxxxxx
Password (case sensitive): (alphanumeric) "new"
Step 2:
Double-click on the Comcast HSI icon on your desktop. This will open the Comcast
High-Speed Internet home page.
Your e-mail is now ready to use in Outlook Express. Simply open Outlook Express.
If you use an e-mail application other than Outlook Express or if you need more
instructions, click on the e-mail icon on the home page.
Step 3:
If for any reason, your computer did not reboot upon completion of this installation,
please shut down and reboot your computer at this time.
Things to Keep in Mind:
* Your e-mail address will change from username@home.com to username@comcast.net
(1)
* Coming soon, you will have the ability to create up to 6 additional e-mail
addresses (for a total of 7) should you prefer to use a different e-mail address
than the one provided above.
* You will have access to your @Home e-mail until February 28, 2002. After that
date, you will have access only to your new Comcast e-mail address. (You will
be able to view only those @Home e-mail messages that you opened prior to February
28.)
* Visit www.comcast.net/connectioncenter/ for updates about additional e-mail
accounts, web space and other new features coming in mid-February.
* In the future, you will also need this user name/login and password to access
your new e-mail and advanced features on the Comcast.net homepage, so please
keep them for future reference.
As we make enhancements to Comcast High-Speed Internet over the next month, you
may experience brief interruptions of service. We realize the importance of your
Internet service. We will do everything possible to minimize any inconvenience
to you.
Please call 1-888-675-1150 to contact our support specialists should you require
assistance.
Welcome to Comcast High-Speed Internet!
Sincerely,
Comcast Online Communications

Best of luck!

OK, it works just like setting up any e-mail account. Once you get your new password just create a new e-mail account and use the info Mike_W and j3rseyBoy posted. That's all I did and it works just fine. You don't need to install the software Comcast says. I just talked to one of the Comcast technicians. You will also be able to setup any sub-accounts you have after February 28. Hope this helps someone a little.

It seems the main problem is the password. That is the only thing that changes other than @home to Comcast.net I'm the only one I know who received an email with my new password. Piece of cake! ;)
