my cable i-net is provided by at&t mediaone in los angeles, ca. i have 3 computers sharing access via a linksys 4-port router.
a week ago i simply lost connection!! usually connecting the cable modem directly to my "host" computer would get me back online. unfortunately this time it didn't work. somehow my network card is not able to get an ip from at&t, i always get an invalid ip starting of as 169.xxx.xxx...... refreshing or renewing the adapter doesn't work. it hangs for a minute then i get an error like "DHCP service unavailable".
i tried a "brand-new" nic (upon tech support advice), called tech support, gave the new adapter address and still no go. tried switching pci slots and even went to the extent of reformatting my hd and reinstalling windows 98. tried diffierent network cables. i also tried installing the nic in another computer thinking something may be wrong with my "host" computer.
tech support is able to "ping" my modem from their end and show no problems. for whatever reason i can't get a valid ip. (i'm beginning to think something may be wrong with my cable modem's connection going to my pc) anyway a service tech is coming over tomorrow. i just hope it isn't a simple thing i could have fixed myself. (i hate waiting for cable guys)
has anyone out there come across any similar problems?? being without internet access (at home) simply sucks :-)
