I am looking for some help and support in this subject. I like to play UT but lately it has been impossible. When I view the list of favorites in UT and refresh the list I see normal pings. Usually in the 60-150ms range (I have Comcast Cable). Once I join the game it is not uncommon for my latency to jump to 3000, 4000, 5000, or even 8000+! I can't seem to figure out why. If I stay in the server and refresh the UT favorites list ALL of the pings to those servers are high to. I really think it has something to do with UT. I have tried unistalling UT and re-installing with the 436 patch. I have no idea what else to do. I am at a loss. My "netspeed" is set to a conservative 8000. No change. Can anybody think of what might be causing this slow down once the I connect to the server? Even pings to websites (using a Windows ping/trace program) jump WAY up when I connect. Anyone? I am despirate. Thanks in advance.

The key point here is that UT shows the same results. When I view the server window the ping times are good to OK. As soon as I join a server the ping jumps to 9000+, sometimes pausing to momentarily be playable, with a quick return to the same situation. I get tremendous packet loss, the game is completely unplayable. If I keep the connection active and then view the latency results in the UT browser window I get the same results. It seems like my connection just falls apart as soon as there is a demand on bandwidth.
I have changed the following:
a) Network ISP (moving from Comcast@Home to Comcast High Speed Internet <- yeah right)
b) NIC
c) Cable Modem
d) Cables/Wires
e) Splitter
f) OS (Win98 to WinXP) -- although I can't really comment on this change since I have has WinXP since I have been on Comcast HS Internet)
I am going to rip my hair out. I have all the symptoms. I know exactly what is going wrong and why I have my problems. Now....HOW DO I SOLVE THIS! AHHHHH! Help, please!
