This has probably been covered many times but I haven't been on this board before.

I have this Linky that I want to use with DSL and my two 98se machines and possibly an me box added later.

I'm scared silly that I may mess up what works for me now. I've just been swapping crossover cables at the modem.

My question is this: Can I just follow the instructions in the manual without going wrong or is there something else I need to know before I plunge in and do it? Any other threads I should see?

I'm using WinPoET.

The unit is incredibly easy to use. Yes, follow the directions. What you want to remember, is that the routers firmware has built in PPPoE support, and you'll see on the setup web admin page of the router where you will enter you username and your password...fill in the "Keep Alive" checkbox down at the bottom of the first page,....click on the 3rd tab in that is called "Status"...and you should see it connected. Once it is connected, you will need to reboot your computers to get the new DNS info,(or IPCONFIG release and renew if you know how, to save time), and you will off and running. The "Web Admin" is how you configure the router, which you view it's setup using your web browser, pointing it to 192.168.1.1.

Because the routers firmware has PPPoE support, you will want to un-install any PPPoE software you have on the computers that are connected to the router, because any PPPoE software on computers can "not mix well" with the PPPoE of the router, and can sometimes prevent the router from authenticating with your ISP. In your case, WinPoet is your PPPoE software.

For starters, make sure your TCP/IP for the NIC for all workstations is set to "Obtain automatically", and you'll be set.

Couple of years ago, the early versions of the Linksys were a bit troublesome and unreliable, buggy. But after setting up near a hundred of them over the years, I've seen their firmware mature well, they've become quite reliable. Firmware since v1.36 or so has been great, current is 1.40.2 or so I think (haven't had first cup of coffee yet, still brewing). It's far from the most powerful router out there, but for sharing to a small network with basic needs, does a great job.

Thank you, Cat.

Uninstall WinPoET first. Then I'm committed so there can be no more procrastinating. ;)
