I have a friend that im trying to set up a small 2 pc network. basically both computers have 56k modems and will access the internet via dial up. ive used a crossover cable to setup the network between the two computers(one on win98 and one on ME). here's what i did for him....I ran the home network wizard on the computer with ME and made the setup disk and did the same for the win98 machine. Everything worked fine that i thought he wanted done and accessing files on both computers was working great. at the time i was setting this up i was not aware that the win98 machine was going to be accessing the internet so i did not mess with the modem on that pc at all. but since i left they had tried to install MSN on the win98 pc and access the internet but everytime they try it tries to dial out on the modem on of the ME pc. and now they are telling me that the home network is not working. i tried to help on the phone but its not going to work because, i can not remember how to install the 'dial up adaptor for TCP/IP' as i was never really into computers when dial-up was common. I've seen it before but i cant for the life of me find it on my win98 box here at my house.

That home networking wizard probably assumed you were going to modem share and use one box as the gateway. I never use those wizards.
Redo the Internet Connection settings on each machine and make sure all programs are set to use the local modem only.
In the Network Properties on each machine, just make sure you have TCP/IP and NetBEUI for the NIC. On one machine, make it's IP address 192.168.1.11, 255.255.255.0 subnet. No Gateway, No DNS, and No WINS. On the other machine, same except 192.1681.12 for the IP.

Well, okay, that's not bad advice , and I'm sure he'll realize that's a typo in the 2nd IP address, but it didn't address his question. He asked how to add the Dial-Up Adapter, so here goes:
1) You need the Win98 CD or cab files
2) Right-click on Network Neighborhood. If it doesn't exist on the desktop, you can go to Control Panel and double-click on Network. Check to see if Dial-Up Adapter is there. If so, you don't need to add it, of course. If it's truly missing, continue to step 3.
3) Click on Add, then on Adapter, and Add again. On the left-hand side, choose Microsoft, on the right-hand side, choose Dial-Up Adapter. Click OK or Close back to the desktop. Reboot when prompted.
