I'm in the process of hooking up a Home Network and connecting to Cable. I have been looking at the Linksys, US Robotics, and Toshiba Cable Modems. I can also use a modem from the Cable Company for $5.00 per month. Any info on which is the best would be appreciated.

I've really never seen a difference in performance from one cable modem to another, although a good NIC is a must, I've always had good results with everything 3Com.:D

The USR/3Com's are out of production, out of business.

Many people like the Motorola.

It's really important that you use a modem from your ISP's list of supported modems.

Some of us prefer to lease so that the whole thing is the ISP's responsibility.

Thanks for the info. I like 3 Com but they don't make Cable modems anymore. U.S. Robotics makes a Model *8000, but I cannot find out anything about it. Guess they haven't sold many. Been talking to folks here and think that for $5.00 a month I'll let the cable company supply the modem. At least for a while. Again thanks

If you can find a good deal on a used uBR904 or uBR924 on eBay, I'd go for it. Otherwise, the Motorola Surfboard 4100 is the defacto for consumer level CMs.

As long as it's docsis, it SHOULD be supported.....but I agree with Kip....better ask your ISP. Good luck getting that info easily.

The USR box is a router, not a modem.

I'm not sure about the USR, but the Cisco uBR 900 series are actually modems that have routing capbilities bundled in.....or maybe they are routers with a cable interface.....in any case, they're cool.

Most interesting. I had not followed the saga of USRobotics being spun of from its acquirer, 3Com. They have been independant and privately-owned since mid-2000.

According to the web site, the modem is not offered for public sale. It is only available through cable ISP's. This is getting to be common, with the Motorola SB4200 and the Toshiba CDX2000 being sold the same way.

i always recommend paying the 5 extra a month, cus the modem is the cable co.s problem it breaks, they exchange it, it gets outdated, they get u a new one, i like that for now cuz cable can change at any time really.

if u want to buy ur own i would personally recomend teh RCA DCM 235 or newer models i have teh 235 and its great! teh motorola sb4100 is good as well and toshiba does ave a nice one
