It's been big news in Canada especially, our two largests ISPs are getting ready to impose download caps. Some as low as 5Gig a month. We are looking for votes to stop this any where it may creap up.

My contract has stated a 3GB/month limit since I signed it, but it's never been enforced. I think 5GB/month would be fair for the price we pay for cable. Even 3GB isn't all that bad.
Those who want more, should pay more (bandwidth isn't free)

Sure we'd all like no limit at all, but it just isn't feasable to allow unlimited bandwidth for every customer. Somewhere along the line this bandwidth must be paid for. In the end the consumer will pay for it. Does everyone want to pay for bandwidth being used by someone else? I don't want to pay for unlimited bandwidth when I rarely go over my cap as it is.

Why should a part time surfer pay the same price as a power downloader?
I get by ok with the limits I now have -3GB-, and if I was to need more I'd be willing to pay for it.

We can't expect to get everything for nothing, but it would be nice :)

No one is forcing you to have broadband. 5 gigs is a lot of data and I doubt I download that much but my bandwidth is my bandwidth and if I want to waste it by downloading garbage 24/7 then that is my right. The only way I slow someone else down is if we are both trying to access the same servers.

they should just say something like... virtually ulimited dowload..

then people won't give a crap. but when u put a number in the cap.. people won't like it even if it's 100 zillion kilobytes..

I've started to monitor my bandwidth and 5 gig is not a lot. I do not listen to internet radio nor watch streaming media more then a movie trailer once or twice a week. Just Forums, browsing and newsgroups and I will surpase that within 20 days or so.

Now I'm curious as to how much I use. Is there anything out there that lets you monitor data tranfers?

When people hear 5GB, it sounds like a huge number when it really isn't. Just the short time I've been on so far today, I've received over 15MB while only sending out 2MB. I could see where a 5GB limit would not be sufficient, especially in todays internet world.

Downstream costs like nothing to ISPs, its upload that matters.

When I signed up with sympatico the only thing they stated was the 999kbps speed cap, everything else was unlimited. Let me stress, that was their selling point during sign up.

No matter what, the ISP's are going to do whatever they want. Obviously their stand point will be if you don't like it drop your service or get another ISP.

rats, I hate not being in control.

Hello my fellow communists.

The reason they are imposing bandwidth caps is because they want to add more people to the network without buying more capacity. They also want to dampen the WAREZ scene. Too many people hogging network downloading software.

Now, I love canada. Isn't that what matters?

Now, canada in my opinion should build an iron curtain to keep out the greedy capitalist pig-dogs to the south.

Dam Yankees imperalists.

I've just gotten yet another confirmation from another "inside" source, to let y'all know these are not people I knew in advance or had spoken to before, that this is true, and we will be getting a letter in both e-mail and postal mail on February 28th.

I dont' have a problem with being capped, I have a problem with being capped at a lower speed that used to be faster at the same price.

Our Petition is now listed as one of the "Most Popular - Top 10 Petitions" for today on http://www.petitiononline.com/ Too bad they lost 1000 of our signatures when their site went down yesterday.

http://www.petitiononline.com/carrick/petition.html Luckily even after losing 1000 signatures two days ago we've just broken 1000. Well done, and keep up the good work, if you have not signed it and agree with it, then please sign, or forward it to someone you know who would like to sign.

You can 'just say no' to bandwidth caps just like you can 'just say no' to paying your income tax. There are better ways to utilize your time and effort. I don't like 'em either.

Cheers

So, we should just laydown and do nothing?? Where is the fight in the American People these days? There is nothing common between taxes and bandwidth caps. If there are enough people to stand up to the ISP'S then something can be done to stop them! We should not be afraid to try! Or we should'nt feel we are defeated before we even start. Where would David be if he did not stand up to Goliath? All he did was try and guess what...he won!

There's plenty of fight in the American people! If I'm not mistaken, the particular MSO in question belongs to some beady-eyed canucks!

j/k :D

True but (IMO) I want all the signatures I can get, since I doubt our beady eyed providers will check all names.

Whoa! Those of us from the United States are Americans. So are our brothers from north of the border, please.

They are only Canucks when their hockey team wins.

I have this argument with Canadians all the time, because as a CDN, I say we are American, since we live in North America, like a European etc. It never goes over well.
