View Full Version : router help
i am running a linksys router the routers firmware has a setting to change the mtu i changed it to 1500 but my conntion is lost does anyone know about this setting and if it will help my speed or what !!!!
TCP options string = 020405b40103030401010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 747520
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 4 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 46720
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 29900.8 kbps (3737.6 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 11960.32 kbps (1495.04 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 51 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
What kind of connection do you have, Cable, DSL, PPPoE, thats a big RWIN, what size is your CPU:)
conntion is cable cpu is p2 450
here is a speed test
Test running..Downloaded 60900bytes in 1160ms
Downloaded 696000bytes in 5600ms
First guess is 994kbps
medium speed line - now test 1mb
Downloaded 1109250bytes in 8180ms
Upload got ok 1 bytes uploaded
Uploaded 1bytes in 110ms

Upload got ok 50000 bytes uploaded
Uploaded 50000bytes in 1650ms
Upload got ok 250000 bytes uploaded
Uploaded 250000bytes in 5990ms
** Speed 1084(down)/340(up) kbps **
(At least 21 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.
I beleive your RWIN is alittle big: try 51100, 64240, 385440, 405880, 417560, 420480, 438000:)
ya ok but what about the router mtu i should beable to set it to 1500 or to somethiing to help with speed ??
No not much affect on speed but it is not the same for all connections, what kind are you on:)
Please click in my signature where it says TCP/IP Analyzer Test tweak here, then:
At top where it says edit click and select, Select all,
Then go back to same edit button at top, click and select copy.
Come back to Speed Guide, same thread you were on, in post reply box, with cursor blinking at begining of box go to top, edit, click, select paste, click, this will put information in box. Please X out your IP address, Thank you.:)

speed was still about the same with all rwin's i tryed

Your connection relies on RWIN, not your friggin CPU or any system specification....
Your most humble opinion,lol:) :)

Rwin = how much info is sent from server before an acknowledgement packet is sent, nothing to do with YOUR system.
How many times must I explain it? Geesh!
I been doing it this way many years, no problems yet, so again agree to disagree, lol:)

Its because the people dont know any better and its teaching them wrong.
Each connection is different, so they have to tweak themselves to see what works.
You are entitled to your opinion:)

You're teachin people wrong, teach them right and we'll be ok.
I'm not teaching anyone anything, I just try and help, if it works, fine, if not they try something else, please case closed:)
hi HalfLifer
so what do you think about thr router mtu??

Well the analyzer shows your MTU at 1500, so all is ok.
Is that what you were asking?
