View Full Version : Re-naming CD-ROMS in Win98
Not sure if this is the correct forum for this subject. If not, I apologize in advance.
I want to change the names of my CD-ROM and CD-RW and Iomega Zip Drives. I cannot do this through My Computer, or through any right click properties I know of. Unlike WinXP, there is no disk management interface in Win98 to do this. Any way to change the names (not the drive letters)?
I doubt it, I've never heard of being able to do it.
CDRoms get there names from the CD currently in the tray, and they get named (labelled) when they are burnt. No way to change the name unless you reburn the CD and give it a new label.
Can you change the name (label) of a CDRom in XP?
Sorry, I dont mean change names of the disk itself, but the drive as it is seen in Windows Explorer.
I see my CD-Rom drive as (E:). I would like to see it as (CD_ROM E:\)
I think you've missed the point.
Drives get named (labeled) and the name (label) gets written to the drive. So it can be done for a HD, but a CD is Read Only and can't be written to.
When you pop in a CD, you notice that the name (label) changes according to which one you put in the tray.
Can you rename a CDRom in XP?
Please answer this one for me, I haven't got XP installed.
Well, In XP I changed the "Removable Drive D:\ to "Iomega Zip 100". XP has a Disck Manager where you can change drive letters and paths within Windows.
You haven't answered my question yet
Can you change the name of a "CDROM" in XP ?
please
I've been answering your questions, you could at least answer ONE for me.
All you need Norm is magic marker, hehe, jk, lol:) :)

To answer your question: I don't know. I only renamed the Zip Drive in XP. It seems (to my stupidness anyway) likely that if I can change one removeable disk drive name, I could change another?
I'll try it when I get home from class (where I am currently posting from) and let you know.-
Thanks Mike, I'm just as curious if XP can do as you are with Win98 :)
OK, my apologies Norm. I am able to rename ONLY floppy drives, such as the 31/2 Floppy and the Zip drive. I cannot rename CD-ROM drives. Can change the drive letters and paths on any drive though.
np Mike, no need to apologize my friend.
I was getting anxious to read that XP could rename a CD drive.
I figured if XP could do it, then so could I in Win98 somehow.
Oh well, it was worth a shot.
Thanks for posting back
Norm
