View Full Version : Temporary Internet Sharing?

My home setup is WIN 98SE with DSL internet.
I just replaced a hard drive in a friends machine and reloaded the OS from scratch. I'd like to be able to connect that machine to the internet through my machine in order to get updates/patches etc.
Is there anyway to do this simply and inexpensively ? In other words without buying nic cards or routers etc?
TIA
Phil
Sans a NIC or router. No. Best way (IMO) is for you to manually get the windows updates and other upgrades/patches, and then toss them on a CD-R or ZIP disk, or USB memory stick and transport them that way.
Very best way is to part with the $20 (or so) it costs for a NIC and connect direct.

or you could just temporarily hook his computer up to the DSL line and download all the updates you need and then move the line back to your computer.
He has no NIC on #2 machine.
Which makes me think...Hey SGPhil, is your DSL modem USB?

No USB. It's a WESTELL DSL modem connected to my pc via ethernet nic card in a PCI slot.
I don't want to remove my nic and install it in the other PC.
Thanks for the replies.

I wound loading AOL for a temporary internet connection ( I will cancel in a few days) via telephone. Downloads are taking forever, but it is simple.
Network them via the serial ports :D

*Ouch* Major slow...Could you get Net through serial? I am thinking no, but I've heard stranger things, I guess.
Yeah, the UARTS in your serial ports can support a 115200bps baud rate. That faster then a 56k modem, not too mention that they have built in hardware flow control :D
All you need is the cable, Windows is capable of serial networking, Windows For Workgroups was able to be installed directly over a serial or parrallel connection.

I thought of connecting via the COM ports (or even the bidirection printer ports). I do have a 25-pin cable. That would give me file transfer.
How would I be able to use the primary PC's DSL internet connection from the 2nd machine?
Phil
Aren't you using Win98? I thought Win98 has built-in NAT features, although Microsoft calls it ICS :D

Yes to WIN 98 2nd Ed.
What I have read on ICS talks to having NIC cards. Maybe I am just not looking in the right places. That brings me to here.
How can I share the internet connection without NIC cards? i.e. using just COM ports or the bidirectional printer ports?
Phil
First properly configure your serial port, then run the ICS setup. During the ICS setup select your NIC (or whatever you use for DSL) as the internet connection, then select the serial port as the network connection.
That should wrap things up for you.

Stef That's cool; but I would still take the NIC out of the one box and place it in the other box, update everything and then put the NIC back.
I bought my parents a PC for Christmas and putting a NIC in and updating everything for me was fast and easy. If you aren't comfortable with handling the card then you are stuck with ICS.
You will obviously need a serial cross over cable.

Nope, not uncomfortable handling the NIC cards! Just LAZY!! In fact I built my own PC from scratch. I rebuilt this other machine too.
Actually I'd like to learn something new, and connecting these two machines for ICS w/o a nic card would be different.
A cross over cable..... hmmmm. Hafta look in my stash of stuff. I had a cable I used for LAPLINK many moons ago (to pump a drive from an old XT to the then new PENT 75MHz!).
Hey! Will this work with USB ports?

the laplink cable will work.
I haven't messed around with USB ports.
You pnly need internet on one machine to get the updates. Download them w/ you machine and then trabsfer them to the other machine via the serial or parrallel port connection.
You can get all the windows updates at the MS corporate site and d/l and save to disk.

Thats just not as much "fun" as figuring out how to do ICS via COM ports.
